Hey Everyone,
My name is frank, I own and race a 86 rx-7 in scca touring class, ITS. My Home track is njmp, I am planning on rebuilding my 13b over the winter and thought I should hook up with some knowlagable people so that if I run into any issues along the way I can call on some gurus to get me out of a jam. I am old school piston engine guy and this is my first rotary attempet. I ran the car all last season and its quite doggy beaing just a stock rebuilt motor. I did have a haltec ecu installed and had it dyno tuned at speed one which we managed to get 170 Hp out of it.I purchased a set of 9.7.1 rotors that I plan on installing over the next few weeks after i have the rotating assembly balanced, planning on sending them to mazdatrix for that, what do you think.Is there any where close to new jersey that you may know of that could do this, well, enough for now, whatch for my handle please in the forum,I will definitaly need advice, biggest thing that scares me is getting the crank angle sensor in the right way and getting the timming right when I put it back together. Welcome aboard ITS, good to have another fellow JERSEYIAN doin the dew,there's plenty of good info on this forum and a bunch of very knowlegeable characters as well. My advice to you is have lots of patience,thorough research,and don't cut corners when dealing with your ROTARY, they frown on this,like everything else in life "what you put in is what you get out"!Curious to know what your goals are with your motor,what are your class restrictions as far as weght, horsepower etc,as it will greatly help someone help you. Also tell us some more about your ride,any other mods besides Haltech? Is yor engine a 4 port or a 6port? GOODLUCK with your build,hope to see and hear more about it, keep us posted give a shout if u need, hopefully i can help you in some way or at least point you in the right direction, also try GOOPY'S PERFORMANCE,there just on the other side of the border of Bergen County,Stony Point NY up off 9w. Truthfully I'm Not sure if its a 4 port or six port, this is my first rotary engine, I'm an old school chevy v-8 kinda guy. Picked up this mazda at the begining of last race season. It was ready to race so I didn't have to do anything to it at that point but drive.It's down on horse power because I get smoked on the strates and catch up in the turns, Thats why I intend on digging into it a little bit and try to find some HP. At this point I know its pretty much a stock re-man motor, Is there a way to tell from looking at it or by the serial # ?

Hey Frank,we need to get you familiar with the rotary, alot of info here on this forum, but don't stop here. Your engine should be a 6-port 13b,unless prev owner did a swap,which I seriously doubt. What restrictions does your class put on modifying your engine, and do you know whats been done by prev owner. To get the real power out of a NA motor it has to be ported,streetported,bridgeported,semi p-ported,or full perhipial ported! There are so many different power adding combo's to choose from but you need to take a lot into consideration, I'm pretty sure you want a motor with the least amount of down time as possible,(not 1 you have to refreshen during your racing season). My project is a different animal,it's a turbo,street ported,semi p-ported daily driveable street/strip car,when done hoping to see over 550hp at rear wheels in grocery getter mode,and just down right beastly for the strip! It all boils down to what hp #'s you need, and what's allowed in your class.You my friend have a lot of research ahead of you,internet's gonna be your best friend for a while! Yeah, Thats the problem, there isn't much we can do as I.T.S stands for improved touring- stock.We are not allowed to port and or polish, only port matching is allowed.I purchased a set of 9.7.1 ratio rotors that I plan on installing which is allowed.Balancing the rotating assembly is allowed but not a lightened flywheel, flywheel must remain stock except for minimum material removed to aid in balancing,A lot of guys have swaped out the stock trans gears for the 91 miata gears to get a better gear ratio, which is not allowed but they are all doing it.So, I do have every thing I need to do that swap also.Donner box and modified input shaft.The car came with a miata L.S.D carrier and 4.33 gear set which is supposed to be better than the stock rx7 L.S.D.The rule book says we are allowed to forward date and back date any parts from the same make and model.The class champion for the past several years actually laps the field during a race.Makes me wounder what hes got going on.He looked at my motor and said its a stock re-manufactured engine and suggested I have it balanced first, and also made a coment about the intake,we can not run carburated intakes, so I was woundering if there is a better choice from a newer model maybe that has better flow or a larger throttle body as we would be allowed to change that due to forward dating of parts.

Give Greg @ SA-Motorsports a call/email and inquire about the different options you can go with. He has done 15+ years of race car driving with the rotary, and mostly with NA motors; I'm sure something can be customized from the specifications that the I.T.S. have in the books.
