Hi everybody, been browsing over the forums, and love the help that I see being offered over the board. I've always wanted an rx7, have loved rotor engines, and have been trying to learn as much as possible about them.



I just picked up a stock 87 rx7 non-turbo that i found at an auction last weekend, and am wanting to start fixing it up a bit. The engine runs very well for 137,000 orig miles, though it does stall out at lights with the ac running ( i was shocked the air actually got cold though)



The gearbox is a bit odd though, was wondering about how to go about fixing it, to get it into 1st isn't a problem, but if i try and pull it straight back into 2nd it tries to bind up, but if i slide it over towards 3rd it'll come right down into neutral no prob. I've got it down where i can shift it fluidly, but i still want to get that fixed first, then i was thinking of doing an engine rebuild and adding a turbo to it.



What order is suggested to start adding some power after the engine rebuild, or should i just wait and pick up a stock turbo model and work from there. Sorry this is a bit lengthy, but i'm still trying to figure out where to even start with this thing...it needs paint bad, but i was looking into a body kit before i did paint, so that'll probably be a little while.



Any suggestions would be helpful...also, is the teardown/rebuild for the engine possible in a 4 day time period (i don't mind 12 hour days doing it, but I am still learning the ins and outs of rotors)....i think that's more than enough questions for now, again, love the site and look forward to becoming an active member of this community.

Hi! re: the tranny, what do you bind up? Can you jam it into second with a little grinding?

the shifter will just wedge up if i try and pull it straight back, then i have to force it back forward to get it free. ( no gear grinding, just the shifter feeling like it's lodged up in something) If i slide it over towards 3rd (just slide the shifter right) it'll come down into neutral no problem, and then right into second at an angle, and no grinding at all. The clutch has great action to it, it's just in the actual shifter.



I don't think it's even in the actual gears themselves, but something in the linkage to them.



I've never had any problems like this with a manual, so I am not sure. I am stationed at a moored nuclear training sub in charleston and work 13ish hour days through the week. I'm going to tear down the shifter some this weekend to see if i can spot anything visually, was just checking if anybody has experienced anything like this to see if it was a quick fix job, or gonna cost me a bit of $$

Plenty of time for qualifying and getting this rx7 running the way i want it to.



I'll throw up a few pics once i get the shifter out to see if anybody can help with what's up with this, hopefully it's just something simple, or i can replace only the shifter itself.

I'm qualifying S5W plant on the mts-626, i haven't had any exposure to the s7g plant.





I pulled out the shifter rod, and the base of it has quite a bit of wear, and the entire assembly has a ton of play to it, the lube was all gummed up with what looked like filings at the base of it.
