Well, must say there is quite a bit to read here. I have owned a few 7's and have one tore apart now and was looking for information. Must say this site provides some entertainment too!
Rotory history...Had a 83 GXL-SE that was a hoot to drive and was hooked. Don't get me wrong there are faster and better cars, but the Rotary is a unlike any other cars I have now or past. I currently own a 93 RX with an Atkin's motor, mild street port with an auto tranny. Transmission has been gone through as well, the car was tuned at pettit racing (down pipe air intake high flow cat etc.) and it is crazy! Not much at a dead stop with the auto but it takes very little time for the turbo's to spool. Wet roads can be deadly!
Car I am working on now is a 87 plain Jane, I have never seen one this cheap, it's a 5 speed air car and that's it! Manual mirrors, steel wheels! Never saw them till this one.
I have had this 88 GXL, I am the 2nd owner and both my daughter used it up! I have replaced the motor at 168 K and now that motor has eaten 2 auto transmissions and rust (was from up north) the car. So needed a body for the 88 parts. Couldn't see giving all that work away. Going though and moving the gxl sway bars, posi, brakes, and better interior seat carpet etc. to this car. It's lighter and should be a good driver. Oh I hope I didn't step on anybodys toes about faster and better, I have a 03 F-150 Lightning that has no idea it's a pick-up truck! But like to keep a rotory around.
