So I was on my way to my friend's apt for a party supposedly, just cruising, savin' gas. I hit a red light. Car pulls next to me. I thought it was a Trans-Am.

Guy whistles at me. I look...it's an FD! haha...I was like "YEEAAHHH!!!! I'M NOT ALOOOOOONE!!!!"

haha..

I haven't perfected launching yet, with my quite unstreetable OS Giken twin-plate w/ flywheel, so I didn't launch.

He semi-launched, and had about 2 cars by the time I went WOT and hit full-boost in 1st. 2nd gear, he hit rev limiter, and was spinning in 2nd(stock rims on his) he says.

So then I was next to him in 2nd, but I hit fuel-cut about about 6,700RPM...lost about half a car thx to it.

By 3rd gear, he ended having 1 car on me, 'tis all.

Then we pulled over to talk.

It was awesome lookin' under that hood. LS1 or whatever. Nice aftermarket radiator with well-done ducting. Totally sweet. Very quiet too, haha, can you believe that? Oh, he shot flames too. So when I saw the LS1, I couldn't help but think about that...usually you affiliate ROTARY with shooting flames out of the exhaust. haha

Cool guy too. Avid forum-er, but aparently he's been somewhat "disowned" for going V8, at least on RX7club he said.

I thought it was cool. He gave me some good rotary-related tips/advice too. :P

My mods? Bah

"Poor Man's Non-Sequential" @ 9-10psi

Greddy 3" down-pipe

stock cat

APEXi N1 catback

OS Giken Twin-Plate clutch/pressure-plate w/ lightened-flywheel

Intakes

Pettit AST coming Monday. :P

What a out-of-nowhere fun night!..till I got to the "party" that is. Bah. >_>

:P

Thats still pretty cool you didnt get stomped by him. He pry has close to 100hp and 150lbsq advantage on you.

rootbeerdragon 12-18-2005 09:44 AM

lol thanks v8

I can't see why it's hitting fuel cut at 10psi with just intakes, dp, exhaust, and "poor man's non-seq."

Explain THAT to me, and then I can 'tune' it....with...you tell me.

I have it turned down to 8 1/2-9psi now.

Learn how to drive, you say?

Didn't you read the part where I said I was uncomfortable with the clutch, thus I didn't launch?

Why do you have to be so rude? Not cool. :/

wow. encouraging.

ProjectD 12-24-2005 11:48 PM

Sounds like you had some fun. I would think with your mods he would have ate you alive but good runs non the less

Lionheart240 12-25-2005 12:27 AM

Eh..I met up with him later and he kept pointing out his loss of traction and lack of manual-transmission skills.

I don't doubt him, but I think he's still exaggerating.

I had met someone who's quite rotary-knowledgable, has quite the collection, and almost bought mine before I did, and he gave me props saying I have a really clean car that's pretty quick. His FD is non-seq, but he has it set up right at a solid 10psi. He couldn't figure out why I fuel-cut at or anything over 10psi either in late 2nd gear, or mid 3rd gear, etc.

Bleh. All I want is 10psi solid. Until I upgrade to Power FC, fuel-pump, FMIC, radiator, etc.

Il RX8 lI 12-25-2005 12:47 AM

Eff the V8. Good run, get the car going better.

rowtareh 12-25-2005 12:47 AM

Don't mind rfreeman27, he is usually grumpy. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

At least the V8 was a clean swap like you said.

OS Giken twin plate unsprung hub clutches are streetable. It's the user that needs to learn how to drive it... not launch it. With the twin plate it's easy to launch. Rev to whatever RPM and dump the clutch. The transmission can handle the torque shock. There is no such thing as clutch slipping a twin plate...why would you need to?

For reference I have driven an OS Giken twin plate unsprung clutch for over 4 years in the FD...probably the same type as you (b type steel clutch cover ...should be TS2B part number) and have only had a problem driving it when breaking in the plates. THAT'S IT. My grandmother could drive my former FD. I know that Dragon, FDOkinawa, igy and two other friends of mine who all run/used to run the b type OS Giken twin plate clutch have said it's very streetable. Are you SURE your plates are broken in?

definatly a lack of ttraction...between the 4.10s(3.42 in most m6 ls1 cars) in the fd rear(i thikn its 4.10) and the couple of hundred pounds that it weighs less than my car and I can break them loose in 1st and 2nd at pretty much any rpm...and if i shift out of 2nd inot third near redline....it'll spin third...so....not an excuse for him, but I can see traction being a huge issue.

Lionheart240 12-25-2005 01:57 PM

I know. Loss of traction seems reasonable enough. I think in the same stroke however, and according to some knowledgable/experienced rotary-owners who had seen/riden/driven my car before I bought it, I'm workin' with a pretty nice FD myself. I couldn't ask for more.

Regarding the clutch. Essentially, of course it IS streetable, my driving it as a DD proves that much. It just took some getting used to. I can drive it fine now, and I think I've figured out that yeah, basically, to launch it, it needs to be revved to about 5K and just dropped. Any lower than that and it bogs, and any type of "slipping" doesn't help either. The idea of shakin' up the stock diff and suspension with 117k miles on it doesn't put much of a smile on my face, however.

What are your suggetion(s) for launching her right?

sweet7 12-25-2005 10:42 PM

Dumping at 5500rpm IMO is a good place to start. Then vary it up and down until you lose or on the hand gain traction.

There's your answer right there. If you start to wheel hop...rev higher. 1ST thing is to get an aftermarket diff. Stock diff can take the torque of a V8...just not the torque shock. Was it Brian Stinson that used a V8 on his rx7/LS1 swap? He would run 10's and launch at 3000 rpms. When he went to 5000 rpms he blew the diff.

Also upgrade to aftermarket toe links/trailing arms. After that...well it's all driver.

2MCHPWR 12-29-2005 10:43 AM

nice race. sounds like fun. what is the guys screen name with that ls1 FD?

Lionheart240 12-29-2005 12:13 PM

Something like FedUpFD3S or something, on RX7club.com that is

4RotorRocket 01-06-2006 12:13 PM

djavorsky 01-10-2006 10:33 AM

Not to hijack but a buddy of mine is putting a 351 in his FC in the next few months, the motor is being modified right now, longer duration cams, etc. So when thats done its going to be my T2 w/ light mods vs. his little v8 monster......

I will just get some video...

I am a FC guys, so excuse the ignorance, but fuel cut at 6,700rpms?

PutsCarB4Girlfriend 01-16-2006 12:49 AM

I was thinking the same thing. Fuel cut on my FC is way lower than that...and why not just get an FCD, they are dirt cheap, especially on here and other forums.

Lionheart240 01-16-2006 02:20 AM

Turns out it isn't/wasn't fuel-cut at all.

It was somehow pre-ignition. Aparently somehow, or something was causing it to do this..but there's so many different reasons, I have no idea.

Motor just went boom on me last night. Nothing else makes sense as to why, except for pre-ignition/detonation type scenario.

Started her up, lumpy idle, stalled, and now won't start. This is never happened before, till last night after installing new plugs/wires, I went WOT on the highway, it "hesitated" as I tried a few times...soon after, she started acting funny.

Hooray.

Anyone want a modded FD for 9k?

I hate my ******* life.

cough::: maybe you chould put a ls1 into it...I bet his si still running :::cough

J/K!!!!!! sorry for the motor going...thats the reason i stopped playing with rotaries.

2MCHPWR 01-16-2006 10:23 AM

sorry to hear that. that sux.

maybe sell your rims/tires to get money to rebuild it?

what size are they?

Lionheart240 01-16-2006 02:46 PM

Rims are 18X8.5 in the front I believe

and 18.9.5 in the rear

245/40/18's in the front

285/30/18's in the rear

Lionheart240 01-16-2006 09:33 PM

Wow. Looks like I over-reacted.

It's not blown. Not one bit.

Spark plugs were fouled to high hell, is all. Started RIGHT up. Perfect idle.

Found out I've got a vacuum leak or two, is all. Causing it to run rich.

Drove it home just fine, just didn't boost.

Gonna go through it tomorow.

It was pulling 13-15 vacuum and idling well at 700-800. Just the vacuum leak would cause it to idle lower, wass all.

Hoorah.

Lionheart240 01-17-2006 09:39 PM

Indeed. Couldn't work on her today though, it was raining hard.

That, and my dog of 8-9 years died today... so I'm not doing so well, mentally right now.

I wanna cry every time I look at my bed and don't see him lying there waiting for me to pet him.

You may not care, but I just had to vent, I'm sorry.

why is that sad? I can see why people dislike the rx swap because it used to have a rotary, but 240sxs already have pistons.
