I don't really want an awesome sound system, but I do like to have functional speakers. One of my rear speakers is going nuts, when plugged in it emits a loud buzzing sound (radio on or off). So I unplug it, but then only the 2 front speakers work (one of which is laying on the floor due to broken dash tabs). Anyways, are there some generic cheap-o speakers I could buy off the shelf that would fit in the stock locations, that sound as good as or better than the old stock ones? And how hard would it be to wire them up? I'm guessing I can't use the stock plugs and wiring, right? I have an aftermarket aiwa head unit.

Wiring is simple, just use female crimp spade connecters and hook onto the factory connectors.

Almost any quality (MB Quartz, Eclipes, Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, etc.)aftermarket speakers will sound better than stock. Especially if it's for your '86 which has cheap cardboard speakers factory. You can find some on Ebay for really cheap prices $10 and up. I got a set of 4" Pioneers for my RX3 to install in my Miata seats for $18 total after shipping. I haven't heard them yet but they have to be better than nothing.



In my '86 I put in Eclipse speakers and they sounded unbelievable when run through an amp w/crossover. They were not super expensive-around $75/pair for 6" in back and I belive they were $45/pair for the front. Amp cost a couple hundered and it really gave me some great mid and highs in the music. If I remember correctly they are 5 1/4 in the front - they may only be 4".



Ask your local stereo shop or take in the one laying on the floor they will be able to tell you what size they are. Try listening to a couple different sets and see which ones sound best for your type of music.
