The current place and configuration of my amplifiers is failing miserably, it is a pedestal design and the base is fixed in the trunk using existing bolt holes, the loctited bolts do not stay tight and it generally takes up too much space.

It is difficult to see just how it works, or doesn't, in the pictures, but I am going to scrap the current set-up and do something different. As some vert owners might know, the panel that finishes the area next to the spare tire has a radius bent in it on the drivers side in an attept to, i'm guessing, make more space in the trunk. On the other side of the panel is a chunk of tin, spot welded to the chassis which acts as a retainer of sorts, which houses the spare tire in a stock application.

My plan is to drill out the spot welds in that chunk of tin and modify the panel in order to free up all that space to accomodate the amplifiers in a new fan cooled enclosure. I want to make the enclosure in fiberglass so it can be painted, but my experience is limited in the fiberglass area, am I biting off more than I can chew here? Would I be better off just building out of mdf and finishing with a laminate, plexiglass and carpet? Any input or other ideas are welcome.

im sure those things will fit under that speaker thing you used to replace the rear deck/sparetire cover thing

It goes pretty far back, but I want to finsih off and utilize all that space, then I can use the well in the trunk for the cheater spare.

I always wondered if the spare would fit in that well in the trunk?

On a coupe it comes up higher then the well and is covered with a plastic/carpet panel.

I dont really call that fitting, I call that in there, lol

Im not a fan of seeing that tire, it also takes away some trunk space sticking up like that.

I use that space for my amplifier and crossover

89 Rag 04-26-2005 08:58 PM

I suppose another eccentric option would be to buy run flat tires and throw the cheater spare in the dumpster, which is kind of a good idea to me, lol. I don't like the look of it in the trunk at all, I might just take the piece of tin out, mod the plastic panel in the trunk, and build a completly different enclosure for all the stereo ****, and possisbly have more space than I thought. I need some mock up measurements and drawings.

ditch the spare.... and let a really really reliable close freind know where you keep it at. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

I'm taking this car out on the road this summer, run flat's look like the best option, I have to have something I can depend on at 4:00 in the morning on a deserted stretch of highway, besides *knocks on wood* I haven't had a flat in years.

I wouldn't go for run-flats if you don't want to sacrifice the cars handling - the new BMW's have them and they're getting bad reviews.

Don't be afraid of fibreglass - it's dead easy.

Few things about run flats:

A) THey do go flat

B) When they go flat, they are irrepairable

C) Irrepairable = buy a new one

D) DOnt throw the donut out, save it for when youll have to wait a day or more until your replacement runflat tire arrives in stock or at your houses.

dont all the run flats require a pressure monitor device as well?

its hard to tell in that picture, but the spares were really flat and had a can

that would inflate the tire to full size

I was under the impression that they are a disposable tire, in the event of a flat you had just under 200 miles to get to a distributor to buy a new tire, i didn't think they could be repaired.

Yes I have read that too, a sensor is needed because they say you couldn't tell if you had a flat without the sensor, until it was too late.

Wow, this is becoming more of a chore than I had planned initially, I would rather not spend a thousand dollars on tires since the Bfg's I have are practically brand new, but putting 5 or 6000 miles on the car and being away from everything familiar for weeks at a time makes me feel like I need something to depend on, just in case.

I would keep the spare, a can of fix-a-flat, and a tire plugger kit if I was going on a drive like that.

You know it will be 3am if and when a tire goes https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683358.gif

If you have everything, you will not get a flat https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

I would also join AAA.

I have AAA, hopefully my nationwide cell phone coverage will work in the area I might get a flat, fat chance probably! lol

Has anyone had any luck with fix-a-flat? I realize it only works for certain types of flats, but having as many means at my disposal can't hurt, can it?

teknics 05-11-2005 05:22 PM

fix-a-flat i hate, mainly cause people seem to always do it, then it doesnt work, then i have to take the tire off, spill the **** on me, wash it off the rim and inside of the tire (it eats the inside of your tires), and then smell that **** on me all day.

its really only good for very small nail holes, and you have to fill the tire with air because you have to put the fixaflat in and then drive around with it in the tire so it can activate.

i prefer just carrying around the plug things, if they dont work they at least slow it down drastically.

Rob x-7 05-11-2005 09:05 PM

one of those little ciggarette powered tire inflaters and a tire plug kit might be your best bet
