I'm building a custom box for 2 10's in a wedge shape box and I'm not sure if it would be better to fire them towards the front or the back. The angeled part of the box is facing the hatch and the flat facing the front.

Subs don't have a particular "direction" they need to go, its an ambient effect.

i read somewhere its best to point them facing something for the waves to bounce off but i dont know if it will really help alot.

Facing the rear should sound better, but experiment with it anyways to make sure..

That's right point them at the hatch and it will sound better / louder upfront. I can't explain why but it's works.

subs create vibrations, the best performance should be achieved when its pointed towards the body (the hatch). i wouldnt point them at the window.

I THINK in a hatch set-up the best deal might be to put the box to one side and

face it it straight ahead, in other words put it on the drivers side and aim it at the

passenger side. In a trunk its best to have it rear firing, but you dont

have a trunk.

Facing them towards the hatch will help them hit harder. Something bout loading up the driver or something like that. Anyway, my Camaro sounded great with the sub mounted in the well at the back, pointed straight up towards the angled hatch. If you opened the hatch and stood with your face right in front of the sub you didn't get near as much bass as with the hatch closed sitting in the drivers seat, yet we're talking a distance of 2 feet versus 7 feet.

Vibration, exactly. Ambient=surrounding, subwoofer placement isn't like placing mid's or hi's where you need to achieve dimension and fill etc., The effect can be achieved from anywhere, subwoofer wattage cabacity, amplifier output, and cubic feet of air space in the enclosure, for starters, determine how hard a sub will hit, not where it is placed in the car.



If you want good clean sound, a sub directed toward the front of the car is best, on the other hand, if you want your peackock feathers exposed and need the "hey look at me" effect, scoot 'em right up next to the back of the car. It never sounds ghetto when ppl can hear the decklid and the license plate ratteling from blocks away.

Just make sure they are secured so they dont rattle. Keep the subs from getting too close to anything. Make sure there is room between were they fire and the hatch. Put it too close and it will reduce the effects.



The guy who founded BOSE marketed that a person should not be able to tell were true bass is coming from. I guess this is why his products are the most over rated in the world!

Thanks for all the info. I was talking to the guy at a local shop and he was trying to explain it to me. Something to do with sound waves reflecting like throwing a rock in water. He went way of my head after about 30 secs. But he said face them towards the back.

Another tip, don't place the sub in the middle of the box. They should have unequal resistance from one side to the other. in other words if you offset sub in the box, when the speaker pushes forward the suction caused behind will be less on one side more on the other. You will get more snap and less boing, a more realistic sound. All the computer generated stats on the size of the box in ratio to the size of the sub is wac if you ask me. They make these huge boxes to "tune" the sub for optimal performance. Well we're not running a concert hall. I have an Alpine 12" sub in my rx, and the box is only big enough to install the speaker in, since i was'nt able to offset it as previously explained, I put a small port on one side. It sounds PHAT, and take up as little space as possible, and can be moved or removed if neccessary. worked great for me. ps this is about the 8th box I have built for cars I've owned, something to be said for trial and error. good luck
