i'm thinking about it. kinda wondering is theres any reason i shouldn't

1988RedT2 02-19-2006 05:46 PM

You mean like fill all the cavities with that expanding liquid foam stuff? I suspect it would be quieter, and delightfully draft-free!

j9fd3s 02-19-2006 08:35 PM

yeah, that and its supposed to stiffen things up

89 Rag 02-19-2006 09:01 PM

One of the big three is doing that from the factory, foam reinforced chassis...

Rob x-7 02-20-2006 08:12 AM

it would only work if you could fill the cavity 100% so that it bonds to the frame, no different then foaming a boat.

if you did not achieve 100% then the foam would do nothing, I doubt using spray cans or pouring foam that you could get the correct results

Baldy 02-20-2006 08:18 AM

What, then, would be the way to get the correct results?

Rob x-7 02-20-2006 08:29 AM

a factory is doing it under ideal conditions, they obviously have specialized guns that inject the foam

the only way you could try to do it would be to close off every hole and close off the opposite end of where you were putting the foam in.

Then placing your container that would be pretty much the exact size of the frame rail, or making a adaptor for a container to be placed against the frame rail, mix your 2 part foam (because the spray foam from home depot doesnt do anything) and let it expand into the cavity while you held the container tightly against the frame until it pused itself back because it was full.

Then clear off your holes when it cured, which only takes a few minutes.

Someone mentioned how people re-weld the seams to get more rigidity.

mazdaspeed7 02-22-2006 11:58 PM

Theres structural foam that comes in a kit of 2 bottles and a mixing tip that injects the foam into the cavities. You are suposed to tape off all the holes and put a pinhole in each one for excess foam to expand out of without making a huge mess.

Ive done it, and its not hard. Just take your time with prep work use due caution.

Rob x-7 02-23-2006 06:01 AM

in your case the tip is just acting as something to direct the foam as it expands, so its pretty much the same thing I said.

if it does not bond to the frame rails 100% though your wasting your time

RONIN FC 02-23-2006 07:43 AM

Ive been thinking about it. I thought it was for rollover protection to keep the a+b pillars from collapsing so easy. I didnt think it made the frame more rigid.

Seppuku 02-23-2006 03:51 PM

id like to try it on the vert

Rob x-7 02-23-2006 08:29 PM

I just took apart a boat that relied on the foam as part of the structure of the hull, because the bond was not there for the foam the hull was compromised, same thing for a frame rail, you can pump all you think you can get in there, if it doesnt bond 100% your wasting your time.

Someone would have to hook up sensors to the frame rails and measure before and after to see if it really worked or not.

Rx7carl 03-16-2006 05:56 PM

Well after reading this article years ago I plan to use it on my streetcar build up.

Rob x-7 03-16-2006 06:37 PM

they combined that with a total suspension makeover, how could they ever see the results of the foam alone?

In that article the car was never completed anyhow

well if the car's quieter thats a plus too.

Rob x-7 03-17-2006 06:51 PM

its safe to say that most people who would foam a car are running a silly loud exuast, the sound deading is a useless thing at that point

ive been driving a 1990 mercedes 190e and the 91 fc is way louder inside. both cars are stock, theres no point to modding the benz

Just strip down the FC, stitch weld the sucker, weld in some bracing as necessary, then put some sound insulation matting down on the big panels. Wouldn't that be easier than some foam stuff? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

Dunno about easier, but more effective. I dont see how foam can make the frame resist flexing.

But i do know a square tube filled with foam resists collapsing in on itself better than a hollow one. Making it good for some rollover protection.

Im still considering it.

Holy ****! "hey wanna take a ride in my rx-TANK?"

j200pruf 03-21-2006 11:05 PM

What about putting in the foam and putting a little air pump to force the foam everywhere?

And what places would u suggest doing this to on an FC? I'm guessing the frame rails that are underneath the car woudl be the place to start.

cymfc3s 03-24-2006 02:33 PM

Ive been seriously considering doing this. I swapped out all my windows and my hatch with another FC here because his had this super nice window tint on it and his hatch was no-where near has nice as mine. The hatch squeeks like crazy. And I didnt swap his hinges, the squeeking comes from inside the hatch structure, and drives me crazy. Ive been tempted to just fill the metal portion with foam to keep the structure from flexing as much.

Corbic 04-03-2006 11:41 AM

What is the real point besides adding god knows how much weight? Most people remove the sound deading material to help with weight.

I don't think the foam will add any more safety to your vehicle either. As mentioned it has to bond properly and get in every little space. If you want safety get a cage, wear a helmet.

If you want a stiffer chassis, get front and rear strut bars, an under car brace and look into re-welding the seams. Race cars don't get filled up with foam, they are double, tripled welded.

Nice little slide show on how to make a Subaru have a stiffer chassis.

Rob x-7 04-03-2006 06:53 PM

the weight is next to nothing, your talking a few pounds if that

Are you telling me my mysterious squeek that I have been trying to locate for 5 years is the hatch squeeking?????!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!??!!?!! ?!?!?!!?!??! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif

Rob x-7 04-04-2006 05:57 AM

I had a sqeek in my trunk of my other car, it was the trunk itself, I adjusted the stops and put a little bit of tape on the latch and it stopped.

mine was one of the muffler hangers rubbing on the exhaust heat sheild. it didnt touch when the car was level on the ground
