Hey everyone, I've had my 87 rx7 for about 2 years now and have been steadily fixing and replacing parts, and now the car for the most part is mechanically and electrically sound on the things that matter. So I wanted to buy a body kit and install it, but after looking at the price of the kit and being able to deal with it, I called around to some local So Cal body shops to have it installed, and they on average are askin anywhere from 600-1000 bucks just to install, I don't even think thats including paint. So my question is are body kits hard to install, cause if is something that I can do at home than I'm gonna save my damn money and buy some new seats instead. The kit I'm lookin at is the Extreme Dimensions Demon Full Kit. Has a fender, rear bumper, and 2 side skirts. I also wanted to do something about the black side molding that is on my car, I don't think it will fit very well when the kit is installed. Thanks for any help I can get in advance. This forums pretty damn good.

normally the fenders and bumpers are simple to install. The sideskirts can be a bitch. Even the best kits usually don't fit correctly, and thats where the $$$ comes in at a bodyshop

$600-$1000 to install a full body kit is a great price without paint.

fitting it is the fiberglassing, grinding, body filling, etc.....

Any ideas where I can find some info on installing kits? I also looked around and I see lots of rx7's that have either ditched the black side moldings or have white ones or something. Can someone tell me what they did? Do those rx7s still have the side moldings just painted white? or did they get rid of them completely or what? I can't figure it out from the pics and searching for information so obscure is almost impossible. I would really rather do as much of my own work as possible. Im even considering painting it myself if I can find a book with some clues on techniques and equipment needed.

bodywork and painting is an artform in itself. you can't just read a book or 2 and expect to paint your car and have it look good. it takes years of practice, and alot of patience. Do what you want, but I would seriously not reccomend it.

Search the net for "fisheyes" and "orange peel" thats what your car will look like if you paint it yourself.

ok so no more painting, although it doesnt make me not want to learn. So aside from the body work which I have decided I will try to do as much of it myself as I can, can anyone tell me what happened to the side molding on this car? Cause when finished its kinda what I had in mind.

Looks like it's been sprayed over..

that car looks like it is a stock s5, bodywise anyway.

well idk, it looks like the molding might be different but i think its just the angle

oh and thats a jspec car, at least the back of its jspec, notice the tails and the wiper on the wrong side, and the bumper

Mikasa 02-17-2005 02:48 PM

wiper on the wrong side? so its supposed to be on the passenger side? Thats how my wiper is.... and as for spraying it over, can I just have the paint shop not mask that part and spray it? or is it better to spray it individually and then have it reapplied?

i think this guy installed his own bodykit
