I just got a new computer and I'm fed up with this one annoying problem in XP.

It is set as a 2 user system, but the problem only happens when I am logged in and only to my desktop.

Problem: I selected a .bmp for my desktop picture and it showed up and worked for a day. The next day when I booted up, the pic show for about 2 sec then gets overlayed with a blue desktop and then my icons show up. On shutdown, the blue desktop goes away and revials my pic right before it closes.

any of you have any ideas? I'm just an idiot with a new PC.

Maybe it's a problem with bitmaps? I've only used JPEGs. I believe you can use Paint to convert the file and save it as a JPEG. Try that!

try right clicking the desktop and selecting active desktop then uncheck show web content.

It's because of an active desktop feature.. Maybe, try disabling active desktop. There should be an option in the desktop properties menu.

Or, you may try going to desktop properties and being sure that your BMP is selected as the background for your profile. Sometimes, you setup a background for the computer, which is all users. Then, each user can overlay his/her background on top of the machine default. Try this one first, I'm pretty sure that's it.

The BMP is listed and also previewed when you go to the desktop properties. I also tried to use one of the std. Micrsoft desktops and it does the same thing with a blue screen overtop of it. I'll try the stuff you all listed when I get home. I'm stuck at work now.... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683358.gif

I have a question.

For some reason ever since I reloaded xp when I go to save a photo it is only allowing me to save it as a bitmap even if it is a Jpeg.

Where can I set it baclk to jpeg?

I got it fixed (for now...).

Under display properties, the Theme was set to "My Current Theme". I switched it to "Windows XP" and the default XP desktop came up and got rid of the blue background. Then I moved the bmp file from a shared folder to my personal folder and set the bmp as my desktop pic. Now it works! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif

Dave, I saw a few posts about the jpg and bmp problems you had on either the microsoft site or another XP help site I was browsing at work. I'll try to find it again, but someone else had the same problem and I think I saw the fix. If I find it I'll post a link, but you may have to wait till tomorrow when I can check my history on my PC at work.

Use the force.

Sinful7 12-04-2003 02:53 PM

Bah, I IM'd Dave with this, figured I might as well post it. The solution to the save as problem - Clear your Internet Explorer cache and/or history and your problem will disappear.
