Im gonna attempt a fresh re-install tonight. Reformat the drives and everything. I was wondering though... Since I have 2 HD's will it repartition both of them? My 2nd HD is all messed up partition wise. Will I have to repartition before I start the install process?

Any other tips or tricks are welcome. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

It's pretty much up to you, you can format them and start over, you can keep one and format the other. it's all your call pretty much.

rotarychainsaw 08-07-2003 07:05 PM

Well I want to reformat both, but I meant to ask will it only do the one with system files on it?

phinsup 08-07-2003 07:07 PM

You can setup the drives in the windows install screen, you can format them both or whatever.

Dysfnctnl85 08-07-2003 07:11 PM

It will not reformat them both at the same time...you have to repartition/reformat each drive individually.

rotarychainsaw 08-07-2003 07:12 PM

interesting

Dysfnctnl85 08-07-2003 07:19 PM

Was that helpful at all?

rotarychainsaw 08-07-2003 07:40 PM

I'll tell you after i'm done. lol

Dysfnctnl85 08-07-2003 07:42 PM

Haha, I'm sure you have it figured out.

I just finished putting together and installing software on my comp for college, and today I read a fix to allow me to install SP1 with XP...so I know someone with a legit copy of XP Pro (unlike my ghetto ****) and I'm gonna have to do it all over again...

rotarychainsaw 08-07-2003 07:43 PM

I got a legit copy of sp1. for free w00t

Dysfnctnl85 08-07-2003 07:54 PM

Well anyone can dld SP1, it's the installation that's difficult if you have a bootleg version of XP.

But SP1 will be mine, oh yes, it will.

all you elite haxors..... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif here is the deal....if you have the 2 HDD partitioned you esentially have 4 assigned drives. a C: D: E: F: if C: D: are on the same HDD formatting C: will not format drive D: this can be said of the other HDD as well. the beauty of this is that on one drive you can asign a specific amount of space for your OS install, and the rest can be used as storage. so lets say you install windows on root c:, and save all your my documents, and kaaza shared folders, prOn you name it on root d:. if your windows install ******* hits the shitter....(which happens ofter) you can format and reinstall the OS on c: and your seperate NTFS partition on d: won't have been touched, and be picked up instantly by the new install.

rotarychainsaw 08-07-2003 08:37 PM

My problem is that disk1 was 1 partition c: and disk2 was 2 partitions d: and linux. I'm getting rid of linux(for now). so now I have a lot of unpartitioned space on hd2. I'll figure it out when I get to it. ha

Dysfnctnl85 08-07-2003 08:37 PM

Red Hat 8.0 is going on my secondary HDD.

I'm introducing myself to the Linux world...

rotarychainsaw 08-08-2003 11:46 AM

OK, so I tryed this last night and it sort of worked. It let me redo the partitions, but didn't give me an option to reformat. That wasn't too big a deal. Once it got up and running again I go to d: and it says not formatted do I want to. So I click yes. After a while I get an error that says disk in d: is not formattable. Whats up with that? I'll probably try again later, but does anyone know whats going on?

Dysfnctnl85 08-08-2003 12:05 PM

Okay here is what you need to do.

If this HDD is secondary, you can boot up windows on the main one and go to my computer. Right click on the drive and go to format.

If it's not, boot up your computer with either a win98 or ME boot disk.

Choose to boot up without CD-ROM support and then you'll get a prompt.

Type A:\FDISK

Delete the primary DOS partition.

Then create a new primary DOS partition.

Exit FDISK and you should be back at the DOS prompt.

Type format C:\

Give it some time.

Hope this helps!

Yes good old fdisk, i cannot remember how many times i've used you.

rotarychainsaw 08-08-2003 04:37 PM

This is XP so I thought DOS was hard to get into or something...

well I used my computer to try and do it and got that error. So I'll mess around more later. Thanks guys.

Another thing, I was thinking of using the repair console to repartition and format everything and then use the install cd to start over again. Does that seem like it will work?

Leetheslacker 08-08-2003 04:38 PM

If you boot from a win98 bootdisk it loads everything, so it doesnt matter what OS you have.

Dysfnctnl85 08-08-2003 05:05 PM

Seriously reformat both drives using a bootdisk, it will solve all of your problems.

Then get Drive Image and make a backup of your HDD in a pristine condition. That way, if stuff gets fucked up, just load the backup and all is well. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/bigthumb.gif

rotarychainsaw 08-09-2003 04:21 PM

Hey doods, I tryed reformating my secondary drive again and it started making clicking sounds. Thats bad right?

Leetheslacker 08-09-2003 04:22 PM

Possibly, did the format work?

wraith 08-09-2003 04:22 PM

yes click of death is evil....is it a loud metallic ping?

rotarychainsaw 08-09-2003 04:31 PM

It was quiet but noticable. The quick format worked, so I tryed the long kind, and it went for a while then started to click, so I said F it.

Dysfnctnl85 08-09-2003 11:58 PM

That sucks! Definitely some internal problems with that drive...
