because jesus changes water into wine. so in christianity theres someone running around changing stuff into alcohol, this never happens in, say, islam.

actually, it's a symbol for blood...

communion ritual, body of Christ, blood of Christ..

not catholic, but episcopalian....same general ritual

In the CATHOLIC church, it becomes the blood of Christ. It is not a symbol.
