Whose Computer Is It Anyway?

More and more companies today provide their employees with computers and Internet access. Should employees be able to use those computers for online shopping, personal messages, personal work, and listening to music or playing games?

Some online office shoppers say that what they’re doing is similar to making personal phone calls. So long as they don’t abuse the practice, they see no harm. And besides, shopping at the office is far faster than shopping from most dial-up home connections.

Employers are less happy about increasing use of bandwith for personal online activities. Some employers find their employees running personal businesses from their office computers. At Lockheed Martin, an employee was fired because the entire company network was disabled for six hours because of an email message heralding a holiday event that the worker sent to 60,000 employees.

Some companies try to enforce a “zero tolerance” policy, prohibiting any personal use of company equipment.

Discuss the problem of workplace abuse of email and the Internet. What specific reasons can you give to support an Internet crackdown by management? What specific reasons can you give to oppose a crackdown? Should management be allowed to monitor all Internet use?

The Above is a message posted in an online class I am taking regarding using the PC at work for personal use. LOL, I instantly thought of NP and SF. :P What do you guys have to say? (I was the only one who said its the employee's problem not the PC)

Dido, my company's policy is that if your work quota is done at the end of the day you can do whatever with the spare time, exept for online gaming.

how much?

As a small business owner who has internet access for the entire office, it is expressly written in the office manual that the internet is for official use only and not personal use. There are consequences for using it for personal use.

I pay for the internet access because I need it for my business...period. My staff is on my time and that time is for working balls to the wall from 7:00 am to 6:00pm. If they want to play, they do it on their own time and on their own dime. If they want to shop and look up personal stuff, let them get their own internet at home. Last time I checked, internet shopping is a 24 hour thing. It never closes.

It is plain and simple. I am not an ass. I actually have staff that love to do what they do and love to come to work everyday. They know that the harder they work, the more money we take in and the more money we take in the more I can give to them. I will gladly spread the wealth to my employees if they show me that they are working hard. I tell my staff that if they have nothing to do then clock out and get off my time but there is always something to do around here.

It reminds me of an episode of That 70's Show. Eric asked why work can't be fun and Red said that they call it work because it is work. If it was fun they would call it Happy, Fun Place. Or something to that affect.

Yea my boss told me to punch the clock and go home one time cuz he was in a bad mood. He wont ever do that again, running advance auto by yourself with two untrained employees must SUCK.

gazellis 06-15-2004 06:44 AM

I would never tell someone to go home because I was in a bad mood. On the contrary, I would want them to stay and feel my wrath. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

I would find something for them to do intsead of sending them home. I don't really care where you work, there is always something to do. Work is never done.

If it was, what would you do tomorrow? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png
