it starts and ends where?
as in what cities and states. |
According to my atlas, it runs from Houlton, Maine to Miami, Florida.
I've been on it in Maine, and it's pretty much a cowpath. Actually, the road crosses the border into New Brunswick, Canada, and it's still called 95, but it appears to end a short distance later. I personally have driven it from Augusta, Maine to just south of Jacksonville, Florida. It's not my favorite stretch of highway. In fact, most of it sucks because it's a very busy road. I'd rather be on I-40 around Albuquerque. My atlas is pretty old. The Florida guys probably know if it goes south of Miami. |
It ends in (Downtown Miami) next to Coconut Grove, then turns into US1 going south.
|
Tidbit of useless information:
All interstates get their number by a percentage of how much of America is north/south or east/west of them. I-95 has 95% of the US to its west, and only 5% on its right. Also, I think state highways Run East/West if its an Even number, North/South if odd...I forget. |
I-95 North Carolina South Carolina Border, stop and go to JR's, huge sellection of cigars and great prices.

That's hwy 2 and 4 connecting to I-75. |
Naming of the highways [edit] Primary routes The numbering scheme for the Interstate highway system is administered by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). Within the continental United States, Primary Interstate highways (or main line interstates) are given one- or two-digit route numbers. Within this category, even-numbered highways go generally east-west, and odd-numbered highways go generally north-south. (However, in some places two or more Interstate highways run along the same physical road, and such a road may be "east" for one route and "north" for the other.) Odd numbered routes increase from west to east; and even numbered routes increase from south to north. Numbers divisible by 5 are roads which go all the way (or nearly all the way) from one border of the U.S. to another. For example, I-5 runs from Canada to Mexico along the west coast while I-95 runs from Miami north to Canada. In addition, I-10 runs from Los Angeles, California to Jacksonville, Florida while I-80 runs from San Francisco to Fort Lee, New Jersey. There is also an I-90 that runs from Seattle to Boston, and shares a portion of its routing with I-80. [edit] Three-digit Interstates Three-digit route numbers, consisting of a single digit prefixed to the number of a primary Interstate highway, are used to designate highway extensions, spurs (odd prefixes), and bypasses and loops (even prefixes) that connect to the main highway within an urban area. For example, there are many extensions to I-80 in the San Francisco Bay Area: I-280 connects San Francisco and San Jose; I-380, I-580, I-680, I-780, I-880, I-980 are also major highways. (I-480 was also an extension before it was demolished following local popular opposition). Three-digit route numbers may be repeated in different states for different roads. [edit] Exceptions |
So my uncertain guess about the directionals were true but no word yet on confirmation of 95 meaning 95% of the continent is to the left.
Could mean continent and not USA or something... |
For arguement sake, how would you explain I-80 that basically runs west to east, through the middle of the country from San Fran to New Jersey?

Well, what I think it could mean is continent, not just the US. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blink.png The east/west thing I thought applied to state highways at first, not interstates, but phin's post I think suggests otherwise. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/cool.png Ya know what, who knows and who cares heheh. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/happy.png |

It's called the Eisenhower interstate system. Google it and you will find plenty of info. |

As the article explaines, they started the Eisenhower highway system from the west coast and ended on the east cost. |
