Okay, so I want to paint my kid's power wheels car a nice bright shade of red, per his suggestion. I have a can of Urethane 2K primer to put on it, but I priced a quart of single-stage paint at the local auto paint store, and they quoted me $55. I really didn't want to put quite that much into it. Anybody ever gunned a thinned-out can of Rustoleum or anything like that?



I figure it'll be good practice for me before I screw up something bigger. Suggestions?

man, rattle can will be fine if you got skills and good spray paint, just take your time.

I mean, I've got a set of gravity-feed guns and enough of a compressor to work 'em. Just seems to look a whole lot nicer than a spray can.

rattle cans can give good results if done right.. I personally like spraying at night or in the shade .. also helps to buy decent quality rattle can paint.. as far as the sray gun stuff i have no clue.. i havent been around that stuff in years now..

Spraying at night is a bad idea unless you live in the desert. The evaporation of the solvents in paint lower the temperature of the part, and at night, when the temp is close to the dew point, water will condense on the part, and cause the paint to blush.



Theres a few paint shops here, and Ive noticed a huge variation in price. One of the stores is close to 50% more expensive for a given paint than the one I use. Try shopping around a little. Alternately, I use rattle cans with good results. Just look for one that doesnt advertise super quick drying(krylon). Its hard to avoid orange peel with quick drying paints on large parts.

yea the technology today in rattle cans is pretty good, i mean i wouldnt rec. on a real car. but this is your sons toy....give it a shot if you like it then awesome, if not...its what $5 can of spray paint and a tad extra work to paint it the other way

DuPont Nason, you can get it in fast dry where the only thing you need is paint and reducer.

Nason is what I use for most of my painting projects. Good stuff, and not super expensive. Usually use Chromabase for 3 stage, but it gets real expensive real quick.

I have done it, but in the garage.. and I live in California too.. so your results may vary.. I have used rustoleum paint on my s10 grille.. and i did a patch on my old b2600i with it.. you could not tell the difference.. rustoleum takes forever to dry but gives nice results.. on my b2600i i did it durin the day.. and added two coats of clear on top of the black.. wet sanded and buffed lightly once cured.. the grille on my s10 I primed during the day, and sprayed in the garaged at night with rustoleum white.. to make sure the spray patterns didnt show up.. left under the heat lamps for a few hours.. let cure and BAM!!! sexy rattle can action..

as mentioned though.. moisture is a problem.. i happen to live in an area where we dont get much though.. but dry time is a factor..



if not .. hot day in the shade while you spray and then bring into the sun.. minimizes spray lines..
