I'm thinking about buying a used RX8. I owned a 1993 R1 and loved it. I've driven the new 8s and think they are comfortable and fun to drive. But I also think they are slow and get awful gas milage. I'm not sure about the reliability. Just asking for a few points of view. I am also considering an EVO or STi as well. Price is also an issue. I can get an 8 for less than an EVO or STi. Just wondering what other people have to say. Thanks. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif

They're much faster at sea level! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...nkeedance2.gif

I don't much care for the EVO or STi interiors. Have you driven all three? I find the 8 to be the most comfortable and driveable; enough to prevent me from considering purchasing an EVO or STi. Then again, I didn't buy an 8 when I had the chance - I bought an A4. lol

Hey! None of that Audi bashing! They are wonderful cars, and in my (admittedly limited) experience, not bad from a maintenance perspective either. My wife's '01 A6 2.7T quattro has been a joy to own.

everytime i see an 8 around here, its being driven by an old lady or soccer mom, even the riced out one!

The bravada was bad. 216,xxx miles.. it's time to let that truck die, but I'm not gonna. First, I'm gonna park it in front of the house for a year and let the sun burn through its paint. Then I'm gonna drive it to a field and shoot it with the AK.

I also have an FD and recently bought a 2005 White Rx8 and love it. It's slow but is a blast to drive. I only got the rx8 since I have to young daughters and they fit really well in the car and love it.

things your looking for i think are the following:

1. as per the latest recall, the idle shouldn't dip under 700rpms (stock tach isnt accurate enough), it should also have the right amount of power (you should drive a few), if its down on power the engine or the cat is dieing, drivetrains are all 10year/100k warranty though

2. when its idling, it should be pretty smooth, if it feels like the engine is sitting on the frame, it needs engine mounts. this is a little subtle, most people dont notice it. automatics are worse

3. make sure the logicon/heater controls work, they have updated parts...

4. clutch isnt warranty, they dont like abuse either. also the flywheel is thin, ive seen em with heat spots on the engine side!

5. we havent relpaced any yet, but the shocks seem to soften up, by 40-50k the rears particularly are pretty done, and the car is kinda floaty.

6. tires; the stock bridgestones sucks, and are expensive....

7. these have bmw/ate brakes, they like to make noises, these are covered under warranty, generally

thats about it, other than that, look for collision damage/poor repairs. mechanically these cars are really simple, and compared to the FD all the parts (except the engine) are dirt cheap

I was also thinking about buying a used one, but they are selling leftover 2006 ones for invoice minus $3000 in rebates. Seems like a good time to jump on one of those.

My buddy at a Mazda dealership let me drive an 04 with 31k on it for the day yesterday, and I think I am sold on getting one. I really like the car, and the price seems right for what I can get one. The one I drove seemed to idle a little rough though, that concerned me. And it was a weak start when I turned the key, I didn't like that either. Are there other warning signs I should look for with this car? I also heard from a guy at Mazda that the 04s had some engine problems, but newer ones didn't?? I just don't want to end up getting one I'm going to have to fix.

ask to see the test results from the latest recall, its got compression and cat #'s

for the weak start, there is an updated battery, and starter

this is all warranty stuff, too, which is good.
