i dipped my furnace's oil tank today, shocking to see only 10% remaining in the tank

so i got out my calculator

nov 28 (filled up) to jan 18 = 51 days

765 litres - 10% = 688.5 litres

688.5 / 51 days = 13.5 litres used per day

76.5 (10%) / 13.5 = 5.6 days of heat if i dont fill it up

either this house doesn't hold heat or the furnace is wasting fuel.. or both

j9fd3s 01-18-2009 05:27 PM

yeah thats not cool, at least its cheap now....

phinsup 01-18-2009 05:43 PM

you dont appear to have calculated the thermal effeciency there, just the fuel consumption.

Seppuku 01-18-2009 05:59 PM

furnace mpg?

1988RedT2 01-18-2009 06:09 PM

I see where you messed up. You need to be measuring the tank capacity in gallons, which are much larger than those metric liters. By using gallons, you will find that the number representing fuel consumption will be much lower.

Unfortunately, this will not have a favorable impact on the number of days until you run out of heat. Our calendar is much the same as yours in that we both use days. If our calendar used half-days, you would find that it would double the time-til-empty.

You are welcome. I offer my services as a technical consultant free of charge to forum members, but if you feel compelled to send me large sums of cash, I believe I can make an exception in your case.

TYSON 01-18-2009 06:09 PM

that's what happens when you're heating 10,000 sqft!

ColinRX7 01-18-2009 08:44 PM

this house isnt any more than 900 sq ft, ask defprun he saw

le tiny

TYSON 01-18-2009 08:54 PM

how much does this bacon grease cost per litre?

ColinRX7 01-18-2009 11:07 PM

eighty five cents

phinsup 01-19-2009 01:02 AM

I'm getting a large discount on diesel this week I just need to decided how much i want to store, only need about 50 gallons in the boat, but at the price I'm getting would be nice to have some extra for the car, getting it for 25% below the pump price, but it's a one time deal :(

I asked them if i could pre-buy 1000 gallons, they said hell no.

defprun 01-19-2009 03:32 PM

1000 squares are a perfect size. I'm in no place to judge i rent an apartment in the ghetto. Gas will dip to like 65 cents here once and a while colinz, you should fill up at the Green station on niagara street in welland. Its regularly 75 cents.

ColinRX7 01-19-2009 09:49 PM

id rather heat this house on propane

and reinsulate it by building a bigger house around this one

and then tear the old house down inside the new house where its warm

TYSON 01-19-2009 10:14 PM

350 bucks a month

sweet

on a related note, my heat pump seems to be frozen up. stupid ground source.

ColinRX7 01-19-2009 10:16 PM

what happen!

TYSON 01-19-2009 10:19 PM

I dunno, ground water must be barely above freezing or something

ColinRX7 01-19-2009 10:21 PM

is has been minus 22 recently...

whos not doing their job to make sure that doesnt happen?

TYSON 01-19-2009 10:24 PM

heating the ground? must be JEEBUS!!

ColinRX7 01-19-2009 10:27 PM

theres some way to prevent that

other than the supernatural

TYSON 01-19-2009 10:32 PM

I don't know the circuit in this building, but usually they would use alcohol in the system which would exchange heat with the groundwater https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif

According to the thermocouple, the tube is colder than 10F
