You know, I subcribe to Motortrend, Car and Driver, and Road and Track, and when Im in the stores I always pick up the Hot Topic Mags of the Month. And Ive always paid special attention for a Rotary Specialty Magazine. I have never seen one. Does anyone know of one? If there isnt one There really should be, Especially a vintage rotary mag, I get irratable looking at modification adds In the backs of magazines that Dont Apply to my car.

I know that crap ay.....
if you got a choice to start your own rotary mag. What would ya call it? |
Not stateside really. In Japan there is RX-7magazine which would be cool to have here. There use to be a publication called Rotary Review but I don't don't know if its around any more. The only copies I ever saw were in the mid 90's.
|
there used to be the rotary rocket back in the 80's...

The only Stateside mag that usually carries quite a bit of rotary stuff is Grassroots Motorsports. They've done several rotary project cars over the years. The "other" forum has had a topic about starting a rotary mag, but nothing concrete.
|
If I could start a ROTARY Mag Id call it something like "RE Automotive" or "Eccentric Shaft".
But if it were an RX-7 specific mag, especially 1st Gen specific, Id call it something like "Two + Who" or " Rotary Drifter". But if it were for The vintage, Like R2s - 1st Gen 7s, Id Just call it "Rotary". What ever it was it would have to be Rotary Specific, No cylinders. Hey thats a good name, "No Cylinders" ! |
rotary sounds good, its simple

It would be pretty hard(read-impossible) to just create a full magazine from scratch. You'd have to figure out a heap of **** out before you even got to getting articles and stuff.
It would be cool though. I get "Fast Fours & Rotary" magazine. |
boostd7 (i think thats who it is) from rx7club is in the process of creating a mag called rx tuner. see the forum for more details.

NOPISTONS!
The magazine. |
I gave this a little thought at one time or another, there are various vehicle specific magazines on the market in the US and I don't see much reason why a rotary engine magazine would not have some following. The fact of the matter is, a good majority of the magazines on the stand are printed, owned and distributed by a handful of companies, so to tart your own magazine is one hell of a task and one that could not be accomplished without some serious cash being put up.
Let's do a quick rundown and base this on a magazine that ONLY has a subscription based distribution, to try to get on the shelves, just one magazine would run the costs out of site. First you would need 3 to 10 writers with various views, they aren't going to work for free, let's say they work part time to start and let's say we only hire 5, monthly outlay wouls be about $10,000. Now we need someone to proof, set the pages, etc, etc... this would be a full time job, $3,000 next we need someone to travel around and take pictures... or now maybe we just have them submitted, so let's stick that aside, let's assume that subscription cost is $15.00 a year, for 12 issues, we spend 55 cents per issue to mail them and plus prolly another $1.00 to have them printed, that's if we manage to do a good volume, say 20,000 subscribers, now we clear 25 cents per issue. That's $5,000 a month minus our labor of prolly $20,000 after we hire the rest of the staff, so we're $15,000 in the whole. This could be made up with advertisers, but it would be months before we got any, maybe even over a year, so you'd need prolly $250,000 to $300,000 to throw at it, plus the fact that it would be highly unlikely we'd get 20,000 subscribers without having any magazine on the shelf, let's say we need to get them on the shelf it would prolly cost another $1.00 per copy, so you'd need another $250,000 to $300,000 to get the mag up and running. So somewhere between $500,000 and $1,000,000 and you've got yourself a rotaryworld magazine and hopefully enough sponsors to start paying back your losses. I'm all for it if you've got the cash! |
Rotary's Boosted, you know, like Alcoholics Annonymous.

Hey phinsup - the guy that makes this new magazine (see below) lives in Sammamish if I'm not mistaken. Small world. Well, anyway....he would know what it takes to make a magazine as he's doing it.
Driving Sports Magazine http://www.drivingsports.com/issues/2/cover.jpg It's in some bookstores such as B. Dalton and B&N. If you see it, check out page 11. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif Ummm, no particular reason. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/cool.png |
BTW - He's the same guy that heads up the Computer Source Magazine that you can pick up free at most Puget Sound bookstores.

Wow, thanks for the serious pimpage Jerk_Racer. Yes, I have a habit of looking up my HTTP_REFERALLS on a regular basis...which led me here.
https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png PHINSUP's numbers are a little off from reality, but a good guess if you haven't done it before. A little background on me: Yes, I am the publisher of Driving Sports Magazine (we had one issue out previously as Northwest Auto Sports) and my first sports car finicky GSL-SE. However, I live in Kirkland, not Sammamish. But back to magazines...Our upcoming January Issue of Driving Sports is a Rotary Special Edition, where we'll be looking at the RX-8, plus all three prior generations. We also have a bunch of rotary-specific tech content planned--so you guys should approve https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png As for a rotary-specific magazine? It takes a lot more to run a sustainable publication than just building and printing it, and subscriptions alone are unlikely to float anything of any useful size (pagecounts get a lot cheaper per unit as the overall quantities are increased) for very long (of course lots of startup cash can fix many ills). I'm interested to see how this Rotary Tuner does. I'm sure someone else has a rotary-specific magazine in the works as well. Rarely do any good commercial ideas exist in a vacuum, and with the recent release of the RX-8 (and considering it's a decent car), now makes good sense. Cheers, |
Hey, no problem. It's a darn good magazine that's just getting started so some word of mouth sales have got to help. It's not like some juggernaut of a magazine such as SCC that is everywhere under the Sun. I'd like to see where it goes as it grows. But that'll only happen if people scoop them up.
Your location. I knew I might have been mistaken. But I think my co-worker (the one I was running off to go to lunch with when I met you) saw your test car (the one you showed me) near his house. He's a true blue, no use talking to, Ford fan. He has some Spidey senses when it comes to Fords so I guess he saw you driving around. I told him about the car at lunch and he did see you in it. Small world indeed. |
Yea I have checked out your website in the past and of course my numbers were a bit inflated, better safe then sorry. I'll have to drop by the book store and get me a copy.
PS Welcome aboard https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png |
