Well the state fish and game opened it's schedule for sports fishing. Thanks to the new packing plant the indians built and the amount of Salmon they are now selling to Safeway sports fisherman, which account for less than 2% of the salmon harvested in Puget Sound will not be allowed to fish for salmon until August 1st. We had been hoping for a June 1st opening, however it isn't going to happen. I'm pretty pissed cause I was planning on selling the boat in August after I did some fishing one last time in puget sound before moving to the east coast. This sucks :(

****** indians

My guess is within the next 5 years they will have destroyed most of the runs.

That isn't how it works. Every year in washington state, the state and the tribes have this big meeting. They use projections from the indians, hatchery releases and some other info to determine the amount of fish that can be taken from the sound by party's OTHER then the tribes, the tribes have unlimited fishing rights, they can take the whole run and forever kill that salmon if they want to and there's nothing we can do about.

They opened one of the largest packing plants on the west coast last year and started selling to Safeway (which btw they get really pissed when I start bitching about it in the middle of the store), anyhow their increased catch comes out of the sports fishing numbers, which as I stated earlier is 2% of the total catch, which means it's quite possible that next year there will be NO sports salmon fishing in washington state, I have read this claim on several different sites and with the announcement of the aug 1 opening I'm starting to believe it.

For the east coasters that only get dyed Atlantic salmon, I'll give you a brief rundown. Washington and Alaska have THE best salmon fishing in the world, whith 5 species of salmon, Chinook, Coho, Sockeye, Pink and Chum... Chinook getting as large as 100 lbs, each with a somewhat unique taste. A couple of these runs are in very serious danger of being extinct. Fish that stay at sea longer are more likely to be fished out of existance. Keep in mind a salmon's life is very important to local environment, they live to breed and die, the process of swimming from the ocean, up river to the lakes to spawn and die causes life around the rivers and streams to flourish, due to the added food source and fertlizer brought to the surrounding areas, etc...

So, Chinook for example stays out to sea for something like 7 years, a good pinch on one run, could in theory completely eliminate the species :(

I honestly don't care if I get to keep the fish, I'd be happy doing catch and release, but they won't even open that up.

heh, I lived in Olympia for 15 years...what part of the sound do you go out in?

Its been 4 years since I have been there :tear:... but I lived on the shore of the next bay with the capital building... I miss it alot. :(

I know what you mean tho, that does suck.
