today i see a 1st gen at the exhaust shop so i decide to stop by to see whos it is. Well the mechanic guy is like its some old ladys. It looks pretty crappy, it was kind of beat up. ANyways, im like what are you guys doing to it, and hes like were doin the cat. Im like what kind of cat are you puttin on it? and the guys like just a regular one. Im like its not gonna last! HEs liek really, im like yeah but i guess he didnt like my advice. They were putting one cat on there, how many cats did the 1st gens have? WHile im having this conversation the other mech is under the car and hes cutting the old stuff off. He cut the heat sheild/dent stopper right off. You know the thing that goes all under the exhaust that is bolted on? Yeah he cut right through it with the torch. Im thinking this guy is the biggest idiot i have ever seen. I was getting upset at their lack of care for this persons car, so i left. anyways thats my story i wanted to share the stupidity of those dumb guys

89 Rag 10-22-2002 11:19 PM

I dont run the lower heat shields on either the '89 or the '85, but then again I didn't hack the fuckers off with a torch. I just have to be careful where I park, I.E. dry grass+sevi exhaust= big ****** blaze...

Shane.Trammell 10-22-2002 11:35 PM

how many cats does the 85 have?

sleeperRX7 10-22-2002 11:57 PM

i un-bolted my heat shield, but no way in hell id cut it off with a torch, jesus christ the bolts that held on the heat shield were prob only 10mm anyways, i could break them off and not have to use a cutting torch, i hate ******* idiots, and this is one reason why no one works on my car but myeslf and trusted friends......later

RotaryBoy88 10-23-2002 01:06 AM

Stupid question, but you guys still have your heat shields on right? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif

Geoffman72 10-23-2002 01:09 AM

I have all mine except the bastards around the turbo. No way I was going through the hassle of putting them back on after my downpipe install.

I have been thinking of custom making one so the intake stays a little cooler. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif

RotaryBoy88 10-23-2002 01:12 AM

I have mine off right now and it ******* cooks the interior spray stuff. you can smell it within a matter of seconds when the cars on. But it broke still.... im getting a first gen Soon!!! Ill be cool with my thermal reactor!!! :bigok:

treceb 10-23-2002 07:00 AM

81 - 85 have 3 cats like real rx7s should, lol.

only 79 - 80 came with thermal reactors.

SoRRoW 10-23-2002 07:18 AM

I dotn have any heat sheilds on both sides of the exhast...

Im running a RB header to 2.5 in exhast...only place I feel real heat inside the car is around my shifter area..I need to change the boots they are bad..

the car does get a little warm inside...but when I redo the inside im gonna get alot of that dam heat insulator to place all over the dam place..

Shane.Trammell 10-23-2002 09:37 AM

yeah these smart guys were replacing 3 cats with one. that cat will be gone in a week

that drives me nuts... people who dont know much and dont work on their own cars shouldn't be "penalized" by going to some ****** jackoff getting paid 8 bucks an hour at a ****** MUFFLER AND BRAKE CHAIN for godsake to find out later his car is fucked up.... you would think that the shops SPECIALIZING in exhaust work would be a good choice... hell no, go with someone you trust and usually that is a small shop with a few dedicated customers. Nobody except the dealer for warranty work or my mechanic of 10 years who rebuilds rotaries will work on my car besides me.

I know I'm going off a little, this is more intended for Midas and shite chains to where you are talking to the mechanic trying to explain, "yeah, this car has 4 lug hubs so make sure you get the pads for normal suspension" and the guy shrugs you off like you're a ****** idiot when this **** is important.

having seen other peoples "quality work" i'm the only one who works on my cars. its amazing the stuff you see out of "professionals" its like they take no pride in their work

I like small woodland creatures myself

Shane.Trammell 10-23-2002 03:46 PM

well this was not a chain place. It was a place called three star muffler. Which makes you wonder why anyone would go there since usually 5 stars is the best. Oh and on each end of the building in BIG letters covering the whole wall it says "NO MUFF TOO TUFF" haha

I have one converter on my car, its not melted https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

Converters are all made of the same material inside, as long as it has a stainless casing, its fine for a rotory.

The new RX-8 has some special converter, I wonder how much they would clean the emissions of a older 7?

At least $2,000

"Emissions are greatly improved by elimintation of the periphial ports and a ew catalyst that traps unburned hydro-carbons in a ZEOLITE or porous crystal-layer for later burn off"

90_GTU_jeremy 10-23-2002 06:50 PM

anyone kow how he bonez cats on rx-7.com are? after ripping my entire exhaust out im probly going to buy the dual cat sysyem from them. it supposedly handles the rotary heat

Shane.Trammell 10-23-2002 07:04 PM

they say on their site that one cat works the best over all of the others. im guessing whichever one that is works really well.

With a single Catco converter and Borla mufflers, I passed NYS emissions, weeeeee!
