I have an '86 GXL. 197k on the car, 65k on the rebuilt. Runs like a dream..

However, as you know, I rear-ended some stupid bitch.

It needs: New bumper cover, new hood and both headlight assemblies + the rad support straightened. I can have all this done for 800 bucks, but then my car will be four different colors.

Also, my oil pan gasket is starting to leak pretty bad. And my differential is suddenly leaking oil and I can't find exactly where from. It appears to be the filler bolt, but I tightened it and it didn't stop it at all. So I'm thinking something above the filler bolt? What's up there? Anyone got pictures? it's the LSD by the way...

I love the car, and I HATE to let it go, but the drain on the battery since the accident (POssibly the turn signal because the right one blinks fast yet all the bulbs and such are fine) and the differential is worrying me. The oil pan gasket I know where it's leaking from and i could just take some gasket gunk and seal the bitch up.

I'm not entirely sure what to do at this point. Let it go or keep it?

Oh, by the way, I'm currently unemployed, so if you're gonna say 'yes' just because you think I might have money to fix the differential if it's in need of replacement, you're very much wrong.

ChainSawOnSteroids 06-24-2006 06:59 AM

i have 100 bucks for you right now

ChainSawOnSteroids 06-24-2006 07:01 AM

and ill pick it up

QuackDamnYou 06-24-2006 01:19 PM

Chainsaw, you're insane! There's a guy that's interested in the car, wrecked, as it sits, for 1,600 .

Insurance will probably give me 1900...the deduct for my tires, stains on the carpet, paint, previous damage (One dent, two dings and a broken tail lens)

Then, after all that is said and done, deduct an extra 500 for my deductible.

I think I'm screwed either way....There's an '89 Dodge Daytona Turbo (Much to my friend Angel's excitement) for $800 bucks with 118,000 on it. But its automatic...:(

j9fd3s 06-24-2006 06:39 PM

i'm gonna say go, unless you have some pressing reason to fix it.

something like this theres always more damage than you think

you have collision on the car???

if thats the case then its going to cost you $500 deductable to fix the car.

They dont deduct for stains on the carpet and your tires, its insurance not a lease turn-in.

your not making that much sense?

and if someone is willing to give you $1700 for a wrecked 1986 take the money and run.

QuackDamnYou 06-24-2006 08:53 PM

It's full coverage, and yes, insurance goes over the car with a fine comb because they're in the business of making money and not giving it, regardless of the fact that USAA is like the best out there. Yes, my deductible is 500 and they will chop that off the top when they total the car or if I fix it (If they let me)

Yes they duduct for carpet, seat and dash condition. As well as glass paint and body plus power option functionality.

My mom's friend used her Camry with some jumpers to give me a boost. My dad took the battery charger on his fishing trip for his friends stupid boat. Drove it around...I think I'm gonna let it go...

I love the car, I've enjoyed having it just as anyone enjoys driving these cars. But, I no longer have a job. I have 40 bucks to my name. I can't get a job without a car and my mother is not willing to share considering she DOESN'T HAVE A JOB and only uses it to GO SHOPPING.

There's a 1989 Dodge Daytona ES Turbo for sale for 800 bucks. I'm going to drive it tomorrow. It looks like hell cuz the paint is shitty but the body is good. The interior looked O.K. Tires are Pirelli and are in good condition. The suspension is pretty damn soft and borderline bouncy...it's obviously worn.

The number I called turned out to be a dead cell phone so I had left a note on the windshield. The guy called me back when he was driving home and saw the message there. He said he bought it off someone else who bought it and couldn't get it to start, so he bought it and the first thing he did was change the sparks, fuel pump, fuel filter and oil. It started right on up. He SAYS the oil runs pretty clean through the engine. It has like 118,000 on it. So now he's selling it. He says the radio does not work anymore (And the antenna has been removed for some reason?)

But...it's....an....automatic....a 3-speed automatic.. :(

He said the turbo still spools though. :-p

I dunno, what do you guys think about this? I'm no longer keeping the Seven at this point. I'm either gonna let get totaled by insurance or try and sell it but the guy hasn't emailed me back about seeing the car tomorrow, so I'm assuming he's no longer interested? Either that or he just hasn't checked his email yet, but that's kinda weird since he wanted to come see the RX-8 TOMORROW.

If I really want the daytona I'm gonna put the RX-8 for 1,100 and put a deposit on the car.

I know there was a recall on the brakes (Fixed by replacing pads) and the valve cover gasket. The valve cover gasket is easy, and I might change it for the hell of it. (Out of boredom and the part being so damn cheap)

Not sure...what you guys think?

Rob x-7 06-24-2006 09:08 PM

I have still never heard of a insurance company taking money away for soiled carpet or wear and tear on the car.

If the car got stolen how the hell would they know how stained your carpet was or what condition the tires were in? What if it burnt?

actually quack is right to a point, if the car is totalled then the ins co will deduct for damages and wear (tires not included), if they allow repair then they just pay for repairs without deductions for wear or damage.

you have an idiot who has $1,600 and wants to give it to you for the car? why is your car not sol yet?

DO IT NOW!!! while hes still high

Rob x-7 06-25-2006 09:20 AM

I deal with insurance comapies just about daily. When you first put a used car on a policy they require the car to be inspected and pictures taken of it for pre-existing damage. Even if you have owned the car and change companies they require a new inspection to avoid scams.

They cant after the fact say "well, your seats are worn out and the carpet is dirty so we are not giving you anymore money"

people allow insurance adjusters to get away with things that are borderline illegal because they do not know thier rights. Most of the time people think they know better then a shop or want to fix the car themselves and have the adjuster come to thier house, the adjuster knows you dont know your rights and takes advantage in the interest of saving the insurance company money.

They may also demand what shop THEY want the car fixed in, that is 100% illegal but most people dont know thier rights and give in out of fear of not getting thier car fixed.

Insurance company practices ( and prices! ) vary from state to state. I understand it's very different in NY/NJ than it is in VA. I have had many cars, new and used, insured through several different companies, and not one was required to be inspected. If you feel that your insurance company is jerking you around, contact your state's Commissioner of Insurance. They will (particulary in Virginia) work to make sure you aren't getting dicked.

QuackDamnYou 06-25-2006 12:16 PM

Actually, they told me over the phone that when the adjuster was to come out they would 'adjust' the value also based on 'your tires' and 'your interior's overall condition' and 'any damage that was on the car prior to the incident'.

No adjuster came out when I put any car on the policy. They don't feel the need to do that, apparently.

I already told them I did not want Heyward Allen Toyota fixing the damage on my car, that I had a friend who would do it for me if the case were I wanted it repaired and he had all parts. They said that's fine.

I'm worried just how well they'll go over it and if I should park it in the grass so that they can't see it's leaking crap.

j9fd3s 06-25-2006 12:39 PM

when i crashed my fd (it was yellow), it sat in a tow yard until monday, then my inurance took it to thiers (maybe have been the same yard for all i know), and then in a couple of weeks they called me and sent me a lot more money than i thought they would. somewhere in there they inspected it.

although they didnt inspect it when i bought it. they do ask a couple of vauge questions about how nice it is, but that was it. i got the car back (i bought a yellow fd for $320 and drove it home, top that), then we took it to a body shop and its now fixed and residing in davis ca, still running on the original motor @100k

i had a point, but i'm not sure exactly what

RONIN FC 06-25-2006 01:43 PM

I want an FD for $320.

Rob x-7 06-25-2006 06:58 PM

laws vary then, like I said- if the car got stolen or was burnt how would they know what condition ANYTHING was in?

You should have the car adjusted at a shop, that way they can take apart some of it and get paid for everything, but in a case of a 1987 GXL they will probably just total it.

QuackDamnYou 06-25-2006 07:23 PM

Ooooooh I've had the FUNNEST day today...

Last night, I had my mom's friend jump me so I could make sure the battery was charged up, knowing that in three days of sitting it would drain. So I go out today to start it and there is absolutely NO power. Walked over to my cute neighbor Paul's house and asked if he had any jumpers. He grabbed this portable little box thingy and walked over to my driveway to jump me. It SLOWLY cranked about three times then fired, screamed to 3 grand and promptly died. He removed the jumpers from the battery the second it revved, so we assumed he'd simply removed them quickly and as a result *somehow* killed it. He reconnected them and I started it again (Turning over real slow) it fired, and I was smart enough to put it in first this time. It revved to about a grand then died. Now that I'm red in the face pissed off, I get out and start checking connections and ****. Then he goes: Now, this is a stupid question, but there is gas in it right?

Me: Yeah, according to my gauge...

Cute neighbor Paul: ...well it is an import...

Me: Pfft, hold on... *Goes and checks the gauge with the ignition on* it reads juuuust under a 1/4.

Cute neighbor Paul: I'll be right back... *walks off to get gas, comes back and starts pouring it in*

Me: That *is* regular unleaded, riight?

Cute neighbor Paul: Uh, I think so. It runs on that right?

Me: No, it runs on hopes and dreams.... *rolls eyes*

So anyway, I started it again (Cranked slow once and fired). So apparently now my gas gauge gives a false reading. Fuuuuuun, eh?

I drove to the gas station, after about 20 minutes of driving, then I go to put gas in and the pump keeps switching off. I had mommy's plastic, so I figured maybe she'd maxed out or something. Canceled it, pressed pay with cash and started pumping, but the problem didn't go away. Well, as it turns out, the gas isn't flowing into the tank very quickly all of the sudden and was tripping the pump-off switch. It took me 30 minutes to get 2 gallons of gas...

When I went in to pay, the girl at the counter goes: Have you never pumped gas before?

Me: Oh honey, I've pumped more than gas before...

Paid and left.

Anyways, so then the battery was dead again! Walked into the pizza placed and ordered jumper cables (He asked what I wanted to order and that's what I told him) so this pizza runner with gorgeous eyes gives me a jump and I'm on my way.

Went to drive the Daytona Turbo. Took two tries to start the fucker. I put it in to gear, got comfy in my seat and thought "Wow, so far it seems pretty decent"

Well first off, the power steering has no fluid , he said it leaks, so it was a fun little manuever getting out. Hit the gas and it stuck a little bit, but slowly returned back to me. The Turbo still spooled, but only provided what the gauge said was like 3lbs of boost. The car was slow as balls! The speedometer didn't work at all.

I went to slow down to stop and my foot is to the floor, but we're not really slowing down a lot. He says that the brakes need to be bled, but the pads were all new! So we're slowing...slowing...slooooooowinSCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EECH! Full. *******. Lock! Out of nowhere!!! Thankfully I know how to drive and easily missed the ditch and the street sign, which ironically was a STOP sign.... Turned around and heard the CVs clickin' like it's no tomorrow. Floored it and finally noticed that the steering wheel shakes violently at all speeds, slowed down a little and it tried to pull. Then I hit a pot hole in the road which seriously almost sent us into a tree because the suspension is so bad.

Drove back, parked it, and told him I'd call him if I got the money.

funny thing is, through all these OBVIOUS problems, he was telling me what a good car it was and that it didn't required anything but paint! BULLSHIT

I'm pretty bummed...800 bucks would've been nice for a turbo car... :(

Then on the way home in the Seven, it starts raining bad. I hit my window switch and by accident pressed the passenger switch that has NEVER worked a day in it's life, suddenly decides it wants to go down halfway in the pouring rain!

I tried to get it to go back up to no avail. So I had my grandmother hold her window switch up and I did the same. Ten minutes later, the passenger window goes up again....

-sigh- What more is this car going to do to me? It's not like I mistreat the car. I maintain it right and have a little fun with it now and again. I love the car, but now the ******* thing is falling apart just because of some stupid bitch who can't drive.

I'm gonna see what insurance wants to give me. The guy that wanted it before hasn't gotten back to me, but some other guy said he's gonna try and get money because he wants it so bad he 'creamed his jeans when he saw it'

There's a red '86 which I think is the one that was previously for sale with the description that it smokes a little upon startup and for a few miles then stops....for 1200.....

:( Where's my tequila? .....Oh yeah, drank it all yesterday...along with Sherry and Wine!

rowtareh 06-26-2006 01:54 AM

Ummm, so after all that you are saying that you own a 86 GXL with some problems? Get rid of it. I am dealing with a wrecked 89 GTU right now, and it is a huge pain in the ass. Not restoring by any means just parting out, but still a pain.

And sorry, but who the hell are you again?? I have not been on this forum as frequently as I was.

Your post reminds me of the last time I dropped in on my insurance agent to see if she could get me a cheaper policy. She was looking extra hot and was in fact perspiring in the luscious valley between her two large, perfectly shaped breasts. She said she was going to have to come over and see if all my standard equipment was in good working order. I assured her that it was. Suddenly I noticed that she had slipped off her high-heeled pumps and was working her foot ever closer to my crotch, her little toes tickling my inner thigh as she got closer to her goal. I blew my load before she could even get started. Then she told me that she would have to check a few prices and get back to me. I thanked her profusely and left, being sure to pull my shirt down over the front of my pants so the wet spot wouldn't show so much....

What I'm saying is that the car DIDN'T have problems before the accident. Well..two..but they were so minor I simply did not care. ******' insurance has to call me back today about getting the local adjuster out here, but I'm not sure exactly what all I should say to get the most out of these fuckers. *Supposedly* the local adjuster for my insurance company is a 'Nice Guy', so I dunno. Who's tool do I have to blow in order to get at least fourteen*******hundred?

Rob x-7 06-26-2006 03:00 PM

I cant for the life of me figure out why you even had full coverage for a car that is not worth anything to begin with?

yeah i know https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif

car is worth $500, cost to fix scratch, $501....

QuackDamnYou 06-26-2006 03:38 PM

Uh, now, my car in fair condition is worth $2,200, but mecahnically, prior to the accident, the car was worth more in 'Good' condition.

$500? My ass is worth more than that, and we won't even go into detail!

I had full coverage because otherwise I'd be stuck without insurance to back me at all.

Some guy offered me 1450, he's coming to see it tomorrow.

Rob x-7 06-26-2006 03:40 PM

take the money and run, a car with no dents is barely worth $1450.

QuackDamnYou 06-27-2006 01:03 PM

Update: Three people want the car. One is coming today, the other is calling later to see if he buys the car, and if not wants to see it, and the third is trying to get his dad to crack and let him get it.

Sold it wrecked for $1,500 just now. :-D WOO HOO!!!!! That's 50 bucks more than I paid for the car!
