Well, its been what feels like an eternity without my baby (actually, only like a month and a half), but the motor is finaly on its way here.

I have never done a brake in nor priming of the engine...so how do I do that?

How will it arrive? Will it have oil in it?

What is the very first thing I do to it? (besides take compromising pictures of me humping it)

How do I prime the OMP?

Should I squirt oil into the chambers? (kinda like the ATF trick, just with oil?)

How do I drive it? (rpm's, hyw/street, time, etc)

Any special start up procedures?

How long to first oil change?

Anything else I need to know?

I am so friggin excited for the motor, its a pineapple streetport. Its cost me a fortune, not to mention the soft costs associated with this fiasco such as living without my car, and the constant nagging from my girlfriend as to why I'd rather spend money on the 7 than her. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

Thanks guys!

How much was the cost, not including nagging?

ChainSawOnSteroids 11-15-2002 10:00 AM

i believe you shouldnt go past 4k rpm's for the first 1k miles

and first oil change is 700miles

winger 11-15-2002 10:05 AM

i was told

first oil change 500miles

second oil change 500miles + 1500 miles = 2000 miles

after every 3000 miles

break in is usually 3000 miles - no WOT, dont go beyond 4000rpm

make sure it doesnt overheat

try to drive it at different rpm ranges

Sunshine: I like your sig. That's pretty creative!

i've heard you actually wanna rev it up so the seals can seat themselves properly.... but maybe that's why my engine blew https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

Peter Ferrell said no need to break in.

(I know some people don't trust him)

But he was EXTREMELY nice to me, and I didn't even spend any money. I actually bought a car from under him... kinda..

He said (And I believe Rikki and Dave can help..) that unless its a NEW engine, with all new parts there isn't really anything to "break in".

Can someone find more info on this?

I recently installed a Pineapple LARGE Street port motor too, so

I'll start with:

1) Make sure you have a strong battery for a good spark

2) You want to get oil into the engine as quickly as possible, one of the ways to do this is:

a) Fill your fresh filter with oil before installing

b) dump oil into all oil leads into the engine (fill both holes that feed/drain oil from the filter) as well as fill oil hole going to oil cooler, might have to refill it 5 - 6 times as it will slowly drain into the cooler, filling it.

3) Check for leaks in the cooling system, if you have compresses air use it to compress the cooling system before filling it. Air will leak from places water won't even think about leaking from. If your cooling system passes the air pressure test, it will certainly hold compressed coolant/water.

4) Make sure to fill your coolant system. Watch to be sure water temps do not climb too high during first 30 minute start/idle. If they do, you likely did not fill the coolant system enough.

5) After it starts for the first time, it is best to let the motor idle for 30 minutes or more before shutting it off. (during this first start idle, walk around the car, checking for leaks!) Revving the engine to 3000 rpm after the first 30 seconds for 10 seconds to get the oil pressure up and oil well distributed though the oil cooling system.

6) If nothing is leaking and the car isn't overheating after the first 30 minutes, take the car for a short spin -- have someone follow you to watch for leaks, etc.

7) After returning, and letting the engine cool a bit, resnug bolts.

These items were the high-points I got from Rob @ Pineapple when we was giving me directions on starting a new rebuild for the first time.

Breakin Rules that I followed:

1) No WOT, no boost for first 500 miles, 5k max revs. (This TOTALLY sucked, I did it in 3 days)

2) Moderate boost (5 - 10psi), 6k max revs 500miles - 1000miles

3) After 1000miles I let her rip, was at the track running 17psi @ 1250miles, hitting the 9k rev limiter

I changed oil and filter after 100miles, 500miles, 1500miles (due now)

my engine didn't really have a break in but it has 150psi compression on both rotors https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png
