The wheels on my AE were painted in the same shameful fashion as the rest of the car... poorly, since I would be breaking some oath by changing the AE wheels, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about powder coating, is it possible and what would it cost?... roughly.

Rob x-7 07-01-2003 11:08 PM

not sure, but you could get them sandblasted and painted.

I could ship you a set of white TII wheels, lol.

phinsup 07-01-2003 11:11 PM

Man that would prolly cost LOL Yea true, I was thinking powder coating would hold up better, but prolly not if it was good paint. The paint job I have on my car now sucks monkey nuts, need to get it re-done, but as most things it requires money.

Rob x-7 07-01-2003 11:15 PM

my paint would hold up as good, plus it could be repaired

if need be, cant repair powdercoat. And it would match the

car 100%.

phinsup 07-01-2003 11:19 PM

Oh yea never thought about that they prolly just have white and that's it. **** so much for that plan. you gonna take that job painting AC out here LOL

PS don't use me as a reference, they know me.

EviLPeNEviL 07-01-2003 11:45 PM

You can search up a wheel shop around your area and see if they'd know anything.

Normally they run around $200-$300 total.

Here are my Enkei RP-01s powdercoated black:

Toight!

drifter 07-02-2003 02:51 AM

mmm thats almost exactly what I wanted to do for my 84, only chrome black. Might have to settle for powdercoating though.

Digisan 07-02-2003 02:58 AM

Nice EviLPeNEviL, very nice

BigTurbo74 07-02-2003 03:01 AM

after a powdercoat does the object change color ?

drifter 07-02-2003 03:15 AM

yes, thats generally the point of it. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Instead of wet painting it, its sprayed with a powdery paint, then baked dry. Makes it heaps more resistant to everything.

BigTurbo74 07-02-2003 03:32 AM

so if you had some polished aluminum rims and you powder coated it what would they look like? non metallic but shiny?

JadedX 07-02-2003 05:20 AM

AES powder coating did my wing and they get brand new colors all the time to keep up with car colors.

the wheels would match your paint with np

i think they charge around 75 a wheel if they are sandblasted and rdy to go.

powder coating is alot better then painting (in the long run)

1988RedT2 07-02-2003 07:12 AM

Wife and I had rally wheels on her '78 L-82 Vette powdercoated by a local company. Nice job. Fifty bucks a wheel. They had a pretty good selection of colors.

banzaitoyota 07-02-2003 07:41 AM

I do my own powder coating

banzaitoyota 07-02-2003 08:54 AM

I am only set up right now small parts. I need a walk-In oven. I am backlogged on projects right now so it will be ~ a month before I can accept any work :(

Yes...they have a new way of coating now that makes your paint look like anodizing. The metal has to be first polished to a shine then a special see powder coating paint is applied. There are several colours to choose from and it gives it that chrome colourd look.

Agreed totally.....if you want it done properly powder coat them. This is what all my fellow bike racers do to their rims and frames. Its very durable and easy to clean.

MazdaEnthused 07-02-2003 03:58 PM

see i want my t2 wheels powder coated black because my car is black this is a good topic wanted to know this stuff for the long run

if you could see the powdercoated boat parts I have to fix because of the

oxidation you would change your tune.

Maybe powdercoat on something that sits in a garage, but I have seen

how powdercoat survives in a harsh situation, and its not pretty

and certainly no more durable then paint.

Maybe more durable then some spray can paint, but not properly applied

and cured epoxies and polyurethanes.

well this is from my presonal experince

maybe the powder coating was done shitty, shitty alluminum, or poor quality of powder.

who knows, but it is still some type of paint right. so y would you be suprized if it fucks up like regular paint?

do u think paint would of lasted as long as powder coating? probly not

Powerdercoat is a resin, same as an epoxy.

Rob x-7 07-03-2003 04:35 PM

powdercoat is a powder, not a resin, it gets sprayed on, but

its dry, electicity is involved and then its baked. Not sure

of the exact details, but its not a resin.

The powdercoating I come across isnt done by one person, or

even by one company, they come from different companies

in different states. And yes, I have seen painted parts

last much longer then powdercoated parts.

Im talking in a marine enviorment, which is a harsh

one, in a household garage neither paint nor powdercoat

is superior. Personally I would rather have something that can

be easily repaired if need be.

When powdercoating goes it comes off in sheets, its also

very hard to sandblast again to redo.
