Anyone know anything about them?
I am selling my 60 inch rear projection and looking at a 40 to 50 inch plasma, the projection isnt worth shipping to costa rica and it takes up half our tv room as it is. Anyhow, there seems to be a MASSIVE price difference in the plasma's, i mean one 42 will be 1500 and the next 3000, i dont see any difference i the specs, wut am i missing? |
Consumer Reports has done several articles on buying plasma tv's and compared the technology with other types of sets. I really haven't read them because my cheap ass will be watching this puny 32" picture tube set until it starts to smoke or the screen goes dark, whichever comes first.

consumer reports charges for their **** and i am poor.

consumer reports charges for their **** and i am poor. Haha. Yer funny. 26 bucks a year buys their magazine, and you're going to drop 3 grand on a TV? If you don't buy it tonight, I'll read up and let you know tomorrow. I suspect the old wisdom will hold more or less true: You get what you pay for. |
oh hell no i am not going to buy it for a month or so. i want to get an idea of wut the sales are like.
The HP plasmas look really nice, lots of good features and high aspect ratio |
get LCD instead, the cabinets are pretty slim, they can be fixed, and have better pictures.
|
really i thought the plasma looked better from multiple angles
|
yea, you're poor, with your 60" projector screen, looking at a 50" plasma... I have a 22" vac tube thats older than I am that I rescued from a flooded basement. Ill take that 60" off your hands :-)

DLP is all I have to say.
Or an LCD like Rob said, and they can be fixed, and video games run smoother on it compared to a plasma. |
Funny, i was just going to ask about the projectors and you mentioned DLP, anybody set up one of the dlp projectors?
|
my buddy has one of them new projectors.. it looks crisp and we only use it on a like 40 inch whiteboard.. only thing is that its better if the room is dark. so depends on how the room you are gonna put it in is.. lcd are nice too.. i read an article and basically plasmas seem more expensive to repair and create more heat.. lcd ones are some of the least problematic but since they are sorta newer in the tv market they dont have as much data to base repair costs over the years..
since you are gonna be out there you should see whats available out there.. incase **** happens.. |
One thing I know about them is they burn out fairly quick. I believe their life span is only like 5 years.

I hate our projection one, because when we turn it on, then off, we can't turn it back on, without waiting at least 7 hours, so we don't blow a fuse. And the fuse takes about 10-30 minutes to replace (including taking the back off the tv, then putting it back on), depending on my days. |
The plasma's have like a 60,000 hour rating on them, after that they are toast.
Projectors, like one you mount on the cieling and project to a screen have a replacable bulb, they are about $300 to replace. |

I'm talking about the 60" projection screen TV's. I think I'd rather go with LCD instead of plasma if I get a TV, because LCD has like an infinite lifetime, the only thing that'll die is the backlight. |

With the current quality of electronics i would be impressed if either of them lasted 5 years. I have a 60 inch rear projection tv right now, they last a long time, my old 50 inch was 8 or 9 years old when I sold it |
At least in 5 years, the quality of electronics is going to be better than it is now, at the rapid pace that technology is evolving.

Hell i remember when the ******* car died before the stereo and speakers. |
i read on PSM that LCD is a better choice than plasma.

i read on PSM that LCD is a better choice than plasma. it is however 3 times the thickness, which might screw my wallmount plans |

|

According to CR, the LCD sets tend to blur rapid motion, and don't run as big as the plasma sets. Plasma sets offer a wider range of ideal viewing angles. Panasonic seems to dominate the top spots for most size sets.
|
yea i definetely noticed the plasma is better from multiple viewing angles
|
Scott, I was speaking of the DLP tv's. Dual Line Projectors is what they are called. Pretty much a rear projection tv, but the image is so sharp and clean, it is purely orgasmic.
|
unless your going to watch the TV from 180 degrees you will not notice the difference then plazma
I always pick up strange pixels in people's plazma tv, like a whole section thats green or blue or something. LCDs you can change the lamp yourself very easily, dont need a repair guy. my tv is pretty slim for its size, its like 16" or 18" |

yea most of the lcd's are 12 to 18 incehes, problem is i want to wall mount so.....

can the walls in costa rica handle a tv?

can the walls in costa rica handle a tv? no nothing is as good as US construction |
and NOTHING beats the amazing construction of Florida!! I should take pics of this house on the canal around the corner, they gutted it, left only the walls, no roof nothing then i think one of the wall fell over, so it's been sitting there with say 3.5 walls standing.
|
im just not a fan of plazma tvs, the bottom really dropped on them, they are not THE thing to have anymore.
|
i have an LG 60" plasma here in Iraq (i'm serious) Picture quality in incredible on it, although i'm getting a lil bit of green and white "snow" on it lately but i think that is due to a bad S-video cable. The TV retails for around $16,000... it's nice, but not that god damned nice. I'd pay $5,000 max for it, and i doubt i'd get it then. When i get back to the US and build my house...i am DEFINATELY doing a projector and screen style set-up.
PS... i'm watching King Kong right now... sorry for this shitty pics but i haven't figured the new camera out yet. It doesn't capture the color quality very well in these pics. I did a side angle pic also so you can see how much side view you get from it. |
was that in one of the palaces?
|
A buddy of mine just bought a sub-$2k HDTV-res projector. It's HDMI-ready for whenever there's more availability of that kind of quality, and it has an amazing picture. Only 1k lumens, but 7000:1 contrast ratio. The best thing about it is the fact that you can plan the location around the rest of the room, instead of focusing the room around the display. Yes, replacement bulbs can be $300, but if you take care of it, that should be the only thing you ever need to replace.
Oh yeah, and you can easily display a 8'-10' screen and have it look AMAZING. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png |
