It seems to me that whether the pipe bends or breaks is a function of the type of steel in the pipe itself, not so much the tool that's bending it. See if you can get an opinion from Banzaitoyota. I think he has some expertise in this area.

This type of tool is widely sold. Here's one from Northern with some favorable reviews: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/sto...ct_6970_628_628

If you're going to be bending it, you want to be sure you're using low carbon, mild steel.

I would agree with redt2 on this. Breaking or bending is a a function of the alloy, not the type of bender. Re-check exactly what kind of steel you are using. If you arent sure, you shouldnt be using it for a cage. If its chromoly, I would recommend you consult someone with experience bending chromoly. Its rather particular to bend radius, and easy to mess up. Id seek someone with at least a quality bender, preferably mandrel for chromoly.

id just have someone else bend it with a nice mandrel bender. cant get a mandrel bender cheap and those other bends look horrible.

plus would it even pass inspection with a compression bend?

im just going to buy the harbor freight one. im pretty sure i can make it work. im going to be using mild steel for the cage. probly an inch and a 1/2 mild steel piping.

you should really find out if compression bent tubing is usable as a roll cage, ive never seen a rollcage made of compression bent piping which leads me to believe its not legal to use.

and an illegal cage is somewhat useless eh?

its fine.

the pipes strength integrity is in its wall thickness and diameter.

If you are going through the trouble of building a cage, you should make it legal. Otherwise, what have you done, other than make it look like a race car? BTW, 1 1/2" OD isnt legal for a cage either. 2 or 4 point needs to be 1 3/4 OD minimum, while 6+ point needs to be 1 5/8" OD min.
