Umm, there isn't supposed to be any spam at all on it, it's pretty slick, nice interface, I don't really need the account, but since everyone is freaking I figured I would get one while the gettin was good.

That's the one where they read your e-mail for you and send you junk mail based on what they read! Would be like saying the add at the bottom send you pm's based on what you post. There's a HUGE difference. Anyhow, the spider isn't "spying" it's mearly looking for keywords and delivering content based on them. |

Yea that isn't exactly what you indicated, it does exactly what the bottom of this forum google add does, it spiders the page and tries to deliver relevent advertising in a column on the right, it doesn't spam you.

https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png So it's OK to read your e-mail, as long as they don't send you more e-mail? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R#>/tongue.png
It's not ok to be misinformed and to try in defend with an article I can only assume you didn't read. I didn't say whether it was good or bad, I mearly pointed out your making a statement that is not really true. Personally don't want a bunch of spam, but the ads do not bother me, also if you think that ANY email you send on the internet isn't easily read by someone who wants to put forth the effort to do so then you are again... misinformed. |
do they read your mail if it is delivered by sparrow?

Nope, I read it a few days ago. It DOES state they will be inserting advertisements directly into your e-mail, which is so much better!
It also states there is potential they could sell the information they gather to others, whom I doubt Google will dictate how they use it! E-mail address + personal information (however benign) + sold to anyone who wants it = SPAM |
I cant, I used the coconut milk to bath anerexic girls in before I ate them
|
did you eat the coconuts, sparrows or the girls?
This is all very confusing! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/wacko.png |
all the above

E-mail address + personal information (however benign) + sold to anyone who wants it = SPAM I don't know how better to explain, you just said it yourself. YOU DO NOT RECIEVE UNSOLICITED EMAILS BASED ON THE DATA COLLECTED!!! The article you supposedly read does not say you do, the statement you are dragging out of that article does not indicate you will be spammed based on the data collected, it simply inserts a targeted ad in the viewing screen, just like the one at the bottom of the add, it's the exact same code. If you're going to bitch and quote bias articles then at least bitch about the facts.... that's all I ask. |
In fact it doesn't even send an annoying little message like yahoo and hotmail puts at the bottom of EACH message you send out. There's no ads in a message sent off the gmail, the only place you see the ads is when you are viewing messages, in which keywords are scanned. Much like the fact that the government scans emails for keywords like bomb and terrorist. except google delivers an ad, the government delivers god knows what.
I hate ads and hate free-email services because of them, it annoys the **** out of me, but you ain't paying, so live with it. If you wanna argue about ads then I'll agree with you, they suck, however the gmail ads are less intrusive in my opinio then the yahoo and hotmail ones. I see people trying to do business off a free account and think it's a joke... if you want to have that convo then fine, but there's no argument if you tell me gmail is nothing but spam ads... let's see I'll check a yahoo account I just opened and the gmail... the yahoo account will already have 500+ spam messages.... gmail 0. |
invite me so i can help you phins :P

THAT IS NOT SPAM! Again, I dunno if you don't understand what spam is or what. YOU DO NOT RECIEVE TARGETED EMAILS!

If you're going to bitch and quote bias articles then at least bitch about the facts.... that's all I ask. But it does state that they can and will (if that court case allows) sell the information they gather. Just because they don't send you unsolicited e-mails themselves doesn't mean someone who buys the information won't. What's the point of buying it then? I don't like the idea of someone reading my mail, or listening to my phone conversations. I don't care WHY they are doing it, I've certainly got nothing to hide, other than nearly useless credit card numbers! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png Can you actually send and receive 1 gig e-mails, or can you just store 1 gig worth of past e-mails? |

I think it's just storage, or at least that's what I would assume and keep in mind if you have a hotmail or yahoo account you run the exact same risks. Hotmail and Yahoo collect a lot of personal info. I dislike all of the free email providers, but you get what you pay for, if I had to choose between hotmail, yahoo or gmail it would easily be gmail. All of the concerns mentioned are a possibility on ANY mail server, something to keep in mind. Any email you send can easily be read by the right people on any of the mail servers it touches in or out. In short, if you don't want unsolicited emails and you don't want your personal info sold, don't use a any free email providers. Like I said I agree with you there, I don't like ads of any kind, so I don't use free email services for my daily emails, if I am signing up for something and think I might get spammed, I do use a freebie box.
