So, I go to the store today on my usual grocery getting trip and since my two sons, my wife and I have taken to eating an occasional snack of hot-air popped popcorn with a bit of salt and real melted butter, I saw that I needed to buy some more popcorn. You know, the "old-fashioned" kind that comes in a jar or a bag and consists of nothing more than popcorn kernels. Imagine my surprise when I found that all my grocery store carried was ONE variety (their store brand) of real popping corn. All the rest of the considerable shelf space was devoted to microwave varieties soaked in hydrogenated oils and slathered in various artificial flavors. I was appalled! Egad! Am I the only person on the face of the earth that shuns "high-tech" food and seeks to feed my family wholesome, healthy eats?

phinsup 04-07-2008 04:54 PM

Its odd that you mentioned the hot air popper, my dad wanted me to pick one up for him so i had them up on the browser. I'm not a huge popcorn fan, but if yer a purist you should shuck yer own corn and **** no? LOL

True enough! I still have some un-allocated space in the garden. Perhaps I should consider growing my own???

just goes to show what we are turning into. i along with you would rather have non microwaved popcorn and all that jazz. kettle corn is the **** infact but it is hard to get and getting harder by the day to find. look around ya though in wisconsin alot or corn feilds have now turned into houses soon we will be having a corn price issue such as the gas price issue lol. ok if that made sence to you good.

banzaitoyota 04-07-2008 07:01 PM

i do air popped also. good point about stocking up

j9fd3s 04-07-2008 07:05 PM

i eat trying to avoid, fructose, and glutin, if you can.

this leaves you with basically natural stuff, just about anything packaged has glutin or fructose in it.

it makes pizza taste really really good too

phinsup 04-07-2008 07:17 PM

yea, yea i am pretty much wheat free, 100% HFCS free, no meats with steroids (buffalo and Organic), lots of tofu and I have no idea how I here from there, but I like the food i eat a lot more, it actually tastes good.

Try the Millet bread mike, it's fuggin awesome, i've found it's amazing for getting rid of acid indigestion.

Old_Skool 04-07-2008 09:47 PM

9BASE3 04-07-2008 10:54 PM

There was this beauty of a Mic I met in Dixie...

Baldy 04-08-2008 07:32 AM

Buy online? And you know that stuff can't go bad if stored properly, so buy as much as you have space for!

G2G 04-08-2008 07:48 AM

What's wrong with natural wheat bread? Wheat is better for digestion than white and healthier. Brown rice is good too.

i just dont eat that much bread! my yoga teachers all over that kinda stuff though...

um she gets laura scudders penut butter, and it tastes like penuts, which is fine, but its behaviour as a liquid at romm temp, is really neat, its like that slime stuff you used to get from nickelodeon

defprun 04-08-2008 12:42 PM

My mah used to get this peanut butter it tastes like nothing and always stays super hard so you'd destroy the bread when you tried to spread it on...but she always said that it was good for me!

phinsup 04-08-2008 01:13 PM

u can make all kinds of peanut butter at the whole foods here out of various nuts, pretty fuggin sweet. anyhow, mike definitely try the millet bread it's wheat free and rocks!

god damn nature lovin hippies.

Baldy 04-08-2008 02:57 PM

What's wrong with wheat bread? I thought it was healthy, but I dislike it either way.

phinsup 04-08-2008 03:20 PM

Basically breads of all kinds especially white breads have very little nutritional value, it's fattening, high in carbs and is basically just a "filler". Your whole wheat breads and multi grains at least have some nutritional value. Many people believe that wheat and wheat gluten have all sorts of adverse side effects and is linked to birth defects and autism, the list goes on. I could go on if I felt compelled, but I prefer just to say that I don't really adhere to any of the above theories religiously as we don't eat wheat simply because Amy is allergic to it and I've found that there are MANY alternatives to wheat that taste in many cases better, so I don't miss my daily bread ration https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.gif We eat organic pasta made with rice, you can't tell the difference, it looks, tastes and smells the same.

A quick internet search could most likely yield a plethora of the disadvantages of wheat, take them for what you will. I definitely stay away from processed foods, i don't eat any high fructose corn syrup and I have found that organic foods have much better flavor then their counterparts. As I also mentioned, we still eat plenty of meat, but we only eat buffalo and steroid free meats, many of the meats are pumped full of various steroids and antibotics which as you can easily figure out, make their way into your system pretty quickly.

1988RedT2 04-08-2008 07:00 PM

Briefly back to peanut butter: I have found that my local big chain grocery is carrying a brand of organic peanut butter. It consists of peanuts and salt and tastes great! No sugar, which is present in rather large amounts in all the big national brands.

Mr. Midas 04-08-2008 10:35 PM

This is pretty cool. I never figured there would be so many others here concerned with healthy living. I've been doing whole foods most of my life. Organics really do taste better. There's nothing better than a light stir-fry with fresh salad or rice /spelt pasta. I eat a fair amount of chicken and fish, a little beef, and as much venison as we can harvest each season.

Mmmmm venison... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/devil.gif

phinsup, have you ever had sprouted grain bread? It's really good toasted.

Oh, we make popcorn the old-fashioned way to. Butter and a sprinkling of brewers yeast. YUM!

defprun 04-09-2008 02:06 AM

you do know most of the hormone free meats are considered hormone free because the stop administering it 120 days before slaughter. I thought i might add that in since i am butcher and worked at wild oats which is now whole foods and i know what goes on behind the scene and i read the fine print. and buffalo tastes like **** really gamey.

Baldy 04-09-2008 09:20 AM

Edna cooks me some healthy foods usually, other than that I just try to exercise (trying to run more). Everything in moderation, I just don't eat many sweets or ice cream and such. Every so often I have a large meal (just had homemade calzones, yum!), but try to work off the extra calories with exercise.

We'll eat nearly anything that has a Publix label on it, I love their bakery and deli products. Publix subs are the best, and their hot meals are awesome (where else can you get sweet potatoes, mac & cheese, and rotisserie chicken, cooked fresh for lunch?). I love Publix probably more than any normal person should.

That is why we eat buffalo, you cannot give buffalo drugs and they have to be free range or they die. Any of of the drugs they pump cattle full of will kill a buffalo in a day.
