As I push harder and develop more job responsibility and obtain promotions and opportunity, my co-workers become more and more rude to me. I think it's interesting that I recently asked for a promotion to a senior-level. I've been told by my boss that I'm to keep the fort down (so to speak) when he's out of town. Now that my co-workers are recognizing that I'm assuming a commanding role while he's gone, they're making more and more resentful (and some downright hurtful) comments to me. I talked to him about this and he said it happens when future management seperates themselves from the future subordinates. It's all new to me, and as much as it may negatively affect my day-to-day attitude (I get bummed when people snap at me for no reason), it's a good indicator of things to come.
