So, my old roomate was tellin me about this program he's trying to get into. It's a nuclear power program targeting engineering students that the navy does. And basically you start while your ein college, and they pay you and then when you get out, you go to ots and go to some more school and are trained to run a nuclear sub.

the pay seems pretty well and the oppurtunities are there, but i was wondering if some of you military guys could give me some more insight. I asked the local recruiter about it compared to just enlisting or going to an academy and he pretty much said that enlisting is the best option and it better prepares you and tried to get me to enlist. So, I was wondering if any of you guys know anymore about this, thanks.

I went thru the enlisted program back in the EARLY 80's. A lot has changed since then.

It used to be divided into 2 sections.

Phase 1 was 6 months of INTENSIVE classroon study, in Orlando Fla.

Prototype: You were sent one of 3 prototype sites: IDAHO FALLS ID, Ballston Spa NY or Windsor Ct. There you had 4 weeks of classroom then you went into rotating shiftwork learning the plant, AKA Qualifying.

Nuke School is one of the toughest programs the Navy had to offer. The Failure rate was around 40%. There is NJO guareentee that your bud will get assigned to subs. Tha class after me was all sent to an Aircraft Carrier.

Actually it just flowed on out.

Back on Topic. IF you pass the NFAT and score high enough on ASVAB, are willing to devote a minum of 14 hours/day to intensive study, you may make it in the nuclear power program. Long gone are the party days of 2.5 & survie, however.

Plus the whole attitude of the submarine force has changed, and not for the better in my jaded humble opinion. No longer is the submarine force a "do-it-all, fix it yourself" type of outfit. The advent of the Trident and New Gen Subs has changed that. Hyman G. Rickover is turning over in his grave at the thought of watchstanders taking readings with a PDA and tracking trends on a computer screen.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!

I have a friend that is in the nuke sub program. We graduated from high school in 03 and he is still or about to finish training. But he doesn't have a college degree but be prepared for more training and lots of classroom time. He says its fun though.
