Ok, so I'm disassembling the differential on my '92 Olds Bravada, and the differential side bearing is STUCK on there. I mean, I know it's pressed on, but this thing is on there so tight I broke a 3/8" flatblade screwdriver and bent a gear puller trying to get it off. How do I release it? I'm about half an inch away from picking taking my angle grinder to it!

get a heavy duty gear puller that you can put an impact gun onto, that what we do at work https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png. you can probably rent one from somewhere.

and obviously dont torch it unless you dont wanna reuse it.

LOL, the bearing is garbage at this point.

So, torch? Angle grinder? What's left is the inner race, pressed onto the differential side hub. This is the bearing that lets the diff spin inside the carrier.. One on each side.

get some ice put it on the bearing and heat up the housing around the bearing the difference in temperature souhold be enough to get it to come out

Uh, it's pressed onto the diff unit, not the housing.

I think I'm gonna try torching it with MAPP gas.. What could possibly go wrong?

nismo convert 12-19-2004 02:12 PM

teknics 12-19-2004 02:15 PM

So, I had a thought.. Torch + Gear oil = fire? Whatchu guys think?

teknics 12-19-2004 03:40 PM

yea you have to be careful, try to get rid of as much gear oil as possible, figured that was obvious thing so i didnt mention it.

its possible to torch it without cleaning gear oil off (guy at my shop just did that to a 98 blazer last week)

its dangerous but you can get lucky.

since yours is outta the car id say clean the biatch down.
