I'm new to the rotary world and looking for some advice from the veterans. I'm about to buy a '85 rx7 that appears to be in good shape, but don't know exactly what to look for. The owner says it has new front brakes, rotors, hoses and alternator. It has a rebuilt carb, and a rebuilt tranny with 60k on it. Is there anything in particular I should check out before i buy? The car looks clean and straight and he says it's never been wrecked. Any help you guys (or girls) can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Its my opinion, and others may have a different one, but with parts
and repairs being so cheap for a 85 I would concentrate on the cosmetic things, the interior all there, not faded, not missing any trim, the wiring not messed with and hacked, people who think they know how to wire radios and amps or anything electrical for that matter but dont can be a nightmare when it comes time to work on the car or trace problems. I look for the most original car I can find, I would rather have visable damage then a car that someone repaired wrong. Body/chassis, wiring, interior, rims, exaust, all this stuff can far surpass the time and money it would take to get the rest of the car right. |
but anyhow, lol--
ask to come start the car cold, and stand behind it and check for smoke obviously drive it, look for smoke or if it runs hot, drive it on the highway,as well as stop and go. Do a compression test if it worries you, check the coolant and oil. |
the most important this to look for are
1. interior, hardest/ most expensive to fix properly 2. body; also really hard to fix properly, most places do c- quality body work 3. mechanical; this is the thing you or anyone else can fix at home, its also inexpensive. mike |
Well for starters it doesn't have the oem engine if it has a rebuilt carb, find out if it has a 12a or 13b. Otherwise I'll have to agree with Rob x-7..
