Since the ECU discussions forum doesn't get a lot of traffic, you guys should check this thread out and see if you have any input.

Man I hate it when people mirror posts in other parts of the forum, that's so gay...

I didnt even bother looking at your link, but i assume you want to know what laptop to buy. Buy the cheapest one off ebay that runs win 98 and has at least a 20gig HD

Fd3BOOST 04-22-2004 11:41 PM

ok I looked, dont waste the cash on a nice laptop that you really should leave strictly to running the tunning software.

FDRacing 04-22-2004 11:41 PM

pretty much, check out one of the computer expo's that are always at the convention center.

It won't just be for tuning.

all you need for the e6x is windows and a serial port. you should get at least a p1.

right now its dos, all you need is a 286, but the e6x windows software is in the pipeline

Dysfnctnl85 04-22-2004 11:53 PM

I emailed them about this but I haven't heard back yet...I heard on RX7club that the Halwin for the e6x was in testing phases.

But my question still remains: will a G4 w/ VirtualPC reliably run the Halwin software?

j9fd3s 04-23-2004 12:02 AM

dunno, it might have connection issues

I'm going to use this laptop for school as well, therefore eliminating those eBay auctions.

F that man search around for businesses in your area then ask them if they have any old laptops they want to get rid of. I bought a Toshiba Satelite for 50 bucks and it now runs my haltech with no problems. Then you can use the rest of the money to buy a real computer. YOu don' t want to have to disconnect and reconnect the haltech every time you get in and out of the car, it gets annoying.

ahhh... I didn't see that one post above that said it wouldn't just be for tuning...

The Macs are nice, but I have a feeling that it might be a pain to get VirtualPC to see that USB serial port as a regular serial port in Virtual PC

I run one of these every day and it totally kicks ass. It's small, light, fast and pretty inexpensive. I carry it around when I'm traveling and don't go easy on it (company laptop.. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub... ) and it seems pretty damn sturdy so far. It also doesn't have a serial port (getting rare on laptops these days), but I use a USB serial port dongle thingie and haven't had anything not work on it yet (use it mostly to connect to serial ports on headless Sun Servers to get to the console.

That's a pretty nice looking laptop. The only complaints I would have about it is the screen size and video card.

To me, that's where the Apple dominates the market in terms of price-performance. The one I've been looking at is $1500 and has half as much RAM, but a 15" screen and a 64mb DDR video card.
