i was looking for a quote, i think by walt whitman, and i have to wonder if these people just walked around saying things to try and get the most quotes possible?

What seems quite humdrum today was considered outright shocking 100 years ago. And I'm sure the "quotability" of authors such as Whitman lies more in the appeal of their words than in their desire to be remembered. I mean, who would give a **** if he wanted to be remembered 100 years hence? That measure of immortality is as much the work of the quoters as the quotee. After all, it takes tea for two to tango. |
