what the hell, thats crazy! where is this at a college campus?

well religion is one of the things i learned not to openly share my opinion about. I have a buddy with a turbo crx that i work on for him and he gets his panties in a serious knot about religion. he told me the other day that if you dont belive in God your dumb. I wanted to kick his teeth in but instead i just thought about ******* my g/f when i got home to defer my violent thoughts.

i dont know alot of the people in here but i myself was raised catholic however now dont go to church or practice any type of religious beliefs. other than when almost dying say "dont let me die God"

haha.

so ill just wait for others until i attempt to "discuss'

hehe

teknics 05-23-2007 10:52 PM

if your friend is a serious catholic, ask him if he believes in dinosaurs. true 100% catholics can't believe in dinosaurs because they dont believe the world/universe is that old. i was raised catholic, and went to private school from pre-k to 8th grade. i believe in some form of higher being i guess, but religion is all bullshit, catholicism is so backwards its funny at times.

try searching for a hardcore catholic website, the stuff they're forcefed to believe is great.

kevin.

inanimate_object 05-24-2007 04:43 AM

Why do you think catholics can't believe in dinosaurs? They're mentioned in the bible at the end of Job, and there's a whole bunch of references to dragons. It's also arguable that the bible supports an old earth (15bn year) point of view, it certainly doesn't contradict it.

1988RedT2 05-24-2007 05:58 AM

Many people take the bible literally and get distracted from the message. The bible is not a chronologically accurate account of the history of the world, and it does not need to be.

Every civilization on this earth has developed a religion. The acknowledgment of a higher power is one of the hallmarks of an intelligent man. You are not God.

Peculiar traditions and dogma aside, the primary focus of religion--or at least, of Christianity--is love. Respect for others. Forgiveness. That's not a bad thing.

"Crusades and the Enquisition"

I'm not for a minute defending the Catholic Church. Churches have often used religion as a justification for wrongdoing in pursuit of self-serving goals. That fact ultimately has nothing to do with, and does not invalidate the whole of Christianity.

i dont feel like debating religion, it makes me sick, basically religion is a sham.

just something for people to turn to when they feel down or threatened or whatever. so its alright if it helps those people out but the brainwashing and denial of scientific data is just stupid.

Fall of Jerusalem (as archeologically supported)...

588 B.C.

Ezekiel 4:4-7

Fall of jerusalem is prophesized to be 430 years after division of Solomon's kingdom...

1018 B.C.

From the end of Solomon's 40-year reign to the start of the Temple in the 4th year of his reign takes us back to...

1055 B.C.

1 Kings 6:1

Solomon's temple started 480 years after Exodus from Egypt...

1534 B.C

Gen 12:10/Exodus 12:40/Gal 3:17

Abraham enters Canaan 430 years before Exodus from Egypt...

1964 B.C.

Since Abraham entered Canaan at age 75 (Gen 12:4), he was born approximately 2039 B.C.

Gen 11:11-26

Arpachshad(Abrahams grandad and Noah's son) born 290 years after Abraham, and 2 years after the flood,

Either the dating of the ruins of Jerusalem are off by a few billion years, or creation week was in 3987 B.C., which makes the world just barely 6000 years old.

thanks for writing what i was too lazy to go about lol. thats the stance of "hardcore" catholics, there are catholics with relaxed views, but ask the hardcore catholics and there is no such thing as relaxed views. relaxed catholics are people who feel they need to belong to a religion to be normal or whatever.

and this isnt just a thing against catholicism, i dont believe in religions, theyre all crocks of **** to get you to give them your own money and so they can add one to the "with us" side of their chalkboards.

i especially like divorced catholics, its hilarious "oh i was reborn after my marriage" STFU.

O Rly?ly 2039 B.C.

Ya rly! Everything you mentioned there seems spot on as far as I can see, apart from the fact that you make no allowance for how long creation took, apart from mention of days and nights, there's nothing to say that the that week couldn't have taken billions of years. In fact as far as I'm concerned there's more to support the alternative. For instance, on one of the "days" adam had the job of naming all the animal species on the planet - I can't see how he could have done that in 24 hours.

Also I'm no expert in Hebrew, but I've heard it said that the word translated as day (yom) refers less to a 24 hour day and more to an extended period of time - especially the way it's used in genesis. The bible uses different literary techniques, it isn't primarily a science book so it uses a lot of metaphors and things - eg commons sense prevails that Jesus wasn't physically a rock, or even a shepherd - why can't the same apply to the 1st chapter of genesis, especially when it's written in a similar way?

I'm not necessarily saying I have the right answer, but it's what seems the most plausible to me, call it my interpretation. The big problems people have with christianity invariably is never with the bible, it's with the christians themselves and their interpretations of the bible - remember at one time "the church" held the belief that the world was flat, even though the bible doesn't support the idea. In fact what you'll find is that the bible consistently goes hand in hand with what we are learning about science, in fact the better understanding of science you have the better understanding of the bible you'll have too - einsteins theory of relativity has this year been validated to within 1% so at this point we can pretty much assume it's accurate, when you read the bible with this in mind it makes more sense not less.

i know this much. jesus didnt die on a cross and early christians didnt celebrate his birth...but yeah discussing religion on the net is kinda pointless.

I do have one major problem with the bible and that is that the bible explicitly bans sodomy and I love sodomizing, so I was destined never to make it in the christian religion.

Let me preface by saying that I have 12 years of religious(catholic) education under my belt, but I think the bible is a very poor reference guide, sorry. It contradicts itself in so many places and is so open to interpretation (as you mentioned) that anybody can (and they do) use it to justify just about anything, from the crusades all the way to banning gay marriage. And sodomy aside, there are some things written expressly in the bible, which I believe are not open to interpretation, such as a woman's place in society. Kudos to you for not getting huffy about it though, most people just can't talk about it. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.gif
