I am quitting my job of seven years and opening my own business. I am sick of working for people no smarter than myself.

Any suggestions or advice from anyone.

Once you are established, buy him out and fire him.

make sure you buy some cool stuff with cash so its not on the asset list, if you get bought out.

What type of business? These are hard times for alot of people and most are out just looking to find work. I'd recommend doing alot of thinking and planning.

apexkw 11-29-2002 02:34 PM

i am my own boss and the only hard part is trying to stay motivated.

9BASE3 11-29-2002 02:49 PM

I could never bring myself to fire myself...

form a plan.

what sort of business are you going to run? DOes it address your strengths and minimize your weaknesses?

Plan some more

Research. I own a retail store, 2 online stores, and a few other business interests. The key to them all was to find something people want and don't know where to get it or something they want at a lower price or higher service level than they're already getting.

Funding

Make sure you've got funds in reserve. Don't spend everything on opening the business, counting on sales to keep it afloat. The first 3 years is your make-it-or-break-it period, and you should have enough to cover both the business' and your personal expenses for 6 months.

THIS IS WHY some people are business owners and their staff thinks "what's so special about this twit? I could own my own business and do better". Chances are he or she had the coin to do it, whereas most of the staff doesn't AND doesn't realize all the owner's responsibilities (quarterly filing of tax collection receipts, payroll deductions and remittance, inventory controls, cross-border shipping and customs brokerage, etc. etc.)

i totally agree with mantis. there is alot of planning and investing that needs to addressed before you quit. a good way to make sure salls are coming in is to buy an existing company that way you have a customer base already. starting from scratch takes time and alot of money. becoming my own boss is the best and worst thing i have ever done in my life.

I am an antique restorer by trade. I have a large clientel aside from my old company.

We stay busy year round. People keep telling me about this ressesion that the country

is in. I just don't feel the effects of it at all. I met with my boss to discuss my plans.

He seemed distraught but was trying to keep a smile on his face. Personally I like the guy,

but in a business... I am fed up with all the BS that happens between he and I concerning cash.

I bring in the most money as a technician in to the company. Yet I am being underpaid for my services.

I can't keep up with my bills on the current salary I make. It's alot yes but he doesn't pay me near what I

should be getting. It's net 63k a year. I just deserve and can make more. I do my work efficently, and with extreme pride and dedication. I feel that it is just time to branch out.

Im 26 and it's just my time to fly. Things were fun while they lasted.

I will contact the IRS next Monday to get the federal ID number that is required when you start a business.

I hope that I am able to find the time to get my Fd back together on schedule.

Obviously you should look into what your market first.

But I to am my own boss, I wouldn't have ever wanted it any other way.

It's alot of work, weekends. . . not free anymore!

But at the end of the day it's nice to know that MY hard work

pays off!

It's a great reward, I would recommend it to anyone who thinks

he/she has to drive to do it!

Don't be stupid, don't go in blind.

But if you really think you could hack it as your own boss. .

Do it!!

It doesn't have to be today, this week. .

but if you plan it out right, have the motivation, the $Financing$.

You'll be fine!

Good Luck with what ever you decide! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

apexkw 11-29-2002 08:33 PM

ok, the way i read your thread was that you just got fed up with your boss and you were going to just quit. i was trying to make sure that you thought ahead and were ready for it. i am really happy that i became self employed. it is really fun to do something and get the credit for it also. good luck with your business, i am sure that if you have een thinking aout it for two years then you have had plenty of time to think aout everything that you need.

All I can say is good luck Dave! I've felt the same way as you for a while now and am heading in that same general direction... although in quite different fields, I'm going for something technology related, still hashing out details, saving cash, etc.

I say if you love what you're doing, have a good plan in place and have enough cash to keep yourself afloat in the lean times then knock yourself out, forget that coulda shoulda woulda B.S.

I only had a problem with this:
