I found out that some one is selling a rx7 not to far from where i live for 400 to 500 dollars and with an extra motor it will be 800 dollars .The only problem that i know of right now is that it smokes a little when it starts and they said it had something to do with a "ring" that went out. I dont know what year it is or any thing else but right now id be happy to get any thing even a peice of an rx7 but any way just thought id let you guys know about my find. i should find out more tommorow ill let you guys know what happens.

Seppuku 04-09-2002 12:31 AM

forgot to ask if you guys could tell me reasons why it might be smoking when it starts

90N/A Rex 04-09-2002 12:40 AM

white smoke or black smoke??

Seppuku 04-09-2002 12:41 AM

i dont know right now ill find out tommorow maybe, just tell me about both white and black smoke

Seppuku 04-09-2002 12:45 AM

you dont think it has anything to do with the apex seals? id hate for that to be it. they are a bitch to replace right?

90N/A Rex 04-09-2002 12:56 AM

yeah you would need to do a rebuild to do it right

As for the smoke there are tons of reasons; running hella rich, have a bad oil seal, have a coolant leak, etc

Blue smoke = burning oil.

White smoke = burning anti-freeze

Black smoke = trouble

If the smoke is longer then say 30 seconds it is a problem. Smell the smoke and if it is sweet smelling (coolant) or smells like anything other then exhaust be wary.

You also don't really know how good the extra engine is he is giving you do you??

If you don't mind putting in the wrench time or spending the money then just use these points as a bargaining chip.

If you want to just buy a Rex and drive it I would be wary of anything that smokes (other then the normal start up)

Good luck with the purchase

i probably wont be buying the extra motor just because theres a chance it wont work.thanks for all the help ill keep it all in mind when i go to look at it.

I would buy the extra motor, but try to bring the price down a bit. If you can get it cheap, buy it. That way you have a motor to rip apart and play with, send off for porting, rebuild, whatever, while you're driving the rex. Then do a quick swap for a decent motor and repeat.

It depends though, on whether the motors are the same series, NA or Turbo, etc. And on the condition of the rex.

Example: Swapping a '91 TII motor into an '86 NA chassis wouldnt be quick and painless (unless you pay someone else to deal with it). And if the car doesnt run well and isnt easy to fix, screw the whole thing, unless he lets everything go really cheap.

I'm a packrat though, I've got that whole "you might use it someday" attitude, so if you arent like that ignore me. I'm just a rotary newbie, out to support my fellow rotorheads and smoke ricers.

I agree with rotorboy. Try to get the price down but get the extra motor. As long as the rotor housingings and manifolds are good you could rebuild it, porting it and do a swap when the engines go bad. But it is your money and your 7 so do what you feel is best for you. If the engine is smoking bad at startup it sounds like its going to need a rebuild soon anyway. Do you know how many miles are on the car??

If the rest of the car is in good shape then I say go for it, but I doubt you want a car that will need an engine, trans rebuild and other stuff right off the bat. It is really up to you. Will it be a daily driver or a project car??

Seppuku 04-09-2002 01:13 PM

i dont know anything about the car other than its price and it was just painted 4 months ago and it will probably start out as a project car for a year and then turn into a daily driver
