If by Popular culture you're refering to main stream media,

Is the focus on these groups needed?

Hmmm, No so much as needed, but as a representaion of todays population.

Sure, Popular culture has always tried to incorperate aspects of "regular" society.

It's not needed, but it depends on what the message is and who they think it needs to reach? I don't think representing of these groups is needed but as it becomes "accepted"by society it becomes the norm. I don't think it's needed, but as society deems it ok.

It becomes normal to have it. I don't feel it's nessesary, in the sense it's not going to make anyone person think it's acceptable. But as the general population comes to view it as a relevent aspect of daily life, so will the rest of mainsteam fallow.

Sorry for the ramble, I'm just tired.

Is this a big paper or just a two pager? The two pagers are the best, short and sweet. I would much rather do a two pager every week and have one final paper than take midterm tests, but thats just me. Seems like kind of a weird topic question to me, does it mean that the increase in the representaion of gay people in the media and such is just the flavor of the month or what? Or does the question imply that the media, i.e. tv, books, whatever, is doing the job of increasing toleration and awareness of these groups who have had little if any in the past? I think the increase of gays in popular culture can be seen as a mix of both the flavor of the month syndrome and an actual gain for those fighting for gay rights and what not. For example, the more people see gay characters on television, in movies etc. they will become more familiar with gay people. More than likely toleration will develop in people from the shear frequency of gay characters presented to them. On the other hand, however popular culture portrays these character will have an impact of how most people view them. If they are shown to be goofballs, then this is what people will see. There are some definite goofballs out there don't get me wrong. Also the whole idea of being gay, bi etc. as popular is just incorrect in my opinion. Its not like coloring your hair or something, you just can't change it from day to day. So to answer the question "IS the increased attention necessary?" I would say no, but it really all depends on what kind of attention it is. I hope this helps man but I really don't know much. I'm just a fairly conservative guy with a liberal education https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif
