This is the first rx-7 forum I could find so I tought I would register. The idea of owning a third generation rx-7 was always cool to me. Unfortunately, I have always heard bad things about engine reliability. How unreliable are the engines? How do the 3rd gen model years differ? How well do the rx-7s respond to mods (exhaust, intake boost controller)? How do you make the engine more reliable? What are a few things to look for when buying a used model? Any answers would be appreciated? Thanks.

Hi Joshua,

You have three available years in the states for third gens. 93,94,95

There are the base ,touring, r1(94) and r2(95) models.

Base models are exactly that. Touring offered a rear wiper, sunroof, bose wave stereo and ?? not sure the rest. Although I have had two tourings and a base model.

Im drawing blanks https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

The r1 and r2 are the sport packages. dual oil coolers stifer suspension, suede seats, no sunroof, front and rear spoilers etc..

The rotary engine is very reliable it's just that they are extremely sensitive to heat. And throwing turbos on a car that is heat sensitive can be a recipet for disaster.

As long as your cooling system is working properly you should not have many problems with overheating though.https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

Of coarse once you start moding them you need to make sure that proper fuel adjustments are made. The engine doesnt do well on lean conditions. It only takes one tunning mistake to break and apex seal.

There are alot of reliability mods that can be done to try to keep your car running strong.

It's all in you, If you start modding a car and you dont know what you are doing you will most likely **** something up.

These cars are already scary fast stock. But when you mod them they respond very well. Power increases are very noticable when adding simple bolt ons such as downpipes, midpipes, catbacks, intakes, larger intercoolers etc... Just make sure you plan your mods and research, research, research.

Welcome,

and what he said. Read through the forums and links fd3boost gave you and you will learn a lot.

I read for weeks if not months before I bought my 3rd gen.

Good luck, Tom

Yes welcome!

The reading is really a good idea.. Read as much as you possibly can. I didn't, and it cost me $5700.

Ok. This is NOT A FLAME. But.........

Phins. We need to make a NEWBIE archive to put all these posts in. This is like the 4th one I've seen so far this month. Just take them, and MOVE them to the newbie archive and they can all see how often the SAME goddamn questions get asked and why we get frustrated. Matter of fact... There should be a "read me" file assiciated with becoming a member. You must read it and answer 10 questions pertaining to the newbie FAQ's. Sorry to the new guy if you are really new and not just a ******* dildo that has had a 7 for like 8 years and just wants to piss me off. Good day.

It's cool dude. Sometime I think it's just people from "other places" doing it to piss us off. But if not, I'm more than happy to help... Go to the 3rd gen section and poke around... I made a big thread about buying 3rd gens in the Archive somewhere...

9BASE3 01-23-2003 12:03 PM

Ok, now you have your RX7. I hope you got a compression check...

Get the recalls done. Call Mazda; Have them run your VIN. If your recalls have not been performed, GET THEM DONE.

Do the fan mod. 1 Wire, 5 minutes. Unbolt ECU, find the 1 stray wire, hook it to a 2-pole switch, Ground it, DONE. Leave the switch on for 2 minutes before shutdown. Shutdown car. Fans will stay on. Wait 30 seconds, turn switch off. Fans will switch to low and stay on for 10 minutes. Engine bay heat removed.

Replace your AST with an aluminum one. Or remove it from the system. (Not recommended, but can be done.) The AST is a weak point in the cooling system. It will crack. I advise doing this BEFORE a downpipe, due to the fact that even though a downpipe will keep some excess heat from the engine bay, it will not keep the AST from failing.

Replace your downpipe. YES you can still pass the sniffer. The stock precat is a very heavy, restrictive pipe that retains a lot of heat after shutdown, and releases it into the engine bay. This leads to premature deterioration of vacuum lines, and wire insulation. The downpipe is fairly easy to replace, and can be done on jackstands, with hand tools.

Install a boost gauge, and a water temp gauge. There is a nipple on the intake manifold Mazda had reserved a boost gauge. Uncap it, USE IT. For the Temp gauge, either tap the filler neck for the Temp sensor, or cut the cooling hose running to the upper intake manifold and install a “t”. Don’t rely on the stock temp gauge. It is no good.

Flush the cooling system and REPLACE the Radiator. The stock Radiator has PLASTIC endtanks. They will fail. Replace it with an all aluminum one.

Replace ALL the cooling hoses. ESPECIALLY, the 2 going to the turbos. They can be removed, but again it’s not recommended.

Replace your thermostat. Self explanatory.

Replace vacuum hoses with silicone hoses. Or do the Non-Sequential mod.

3 MOD RULE: You may hear that you can run 3 mods with no ECU. It can be done, but is not recommended. If you have an exorbitant amount of cash, then don’t listen to me.

If you get three mods, your fourth should be an ECU. Enough said.

Please, do not buy an RX7 and think you rule the world. YOU DON’T. Take care of it. It is a VERY reliable car if treated right. If you want to be a statistic of the “ I heard RX7’s blow up at 60,000 miles…. BLAH, BLAH, BLAH….” Then pay me no mind. Happy Rotoring!

Here's some I did... Please add to it if you like.

I strongly agree...I think Fd3BOOST is tired of copy and pasting the same stuff for every newbie. He couldn't possibly have that much free time to type that phrase every time! (hopefully) Maybe not so much as a newbie forum...but something like a learners corner. Just a thought though https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png
