Today is one of those days when I wonder if it is really worth having pets. You get attached to them and then it tears you up when you have to let them go.

Last night we had to take my parents St Bernard to be put down. Clemson was a cool dog that was just like a big bear, all 180lbs worth. He ended up having his stomach flip and became bloated at some point over the past 2-3 days and he was in pain. Vet said they could do surgery, but couldn't guarantee if he would make it. On top of that his hips have been bad for the past couple of years. I know what we did was the right thing to do, but it still sucks. I feel even worse for my dad, it was his "buddy" when he worked outside.

I'm just waiting to get out of this f-ing place and go for a blast down some nice back roads on the way home from work.

Are pets really worth it?

Whenever I think of having a pet, I think of scenarios like this. I do think they're worth it, but it's definitely tough to see them go. Sorry to hear about their dog. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/sad.png

If you like pets, then I say they're worth it. Having a whole bunch of them, maybe not worth it. We have a chesepeake bay retriever, australian shephard, chihuahua, and 2 cats. We're spending more on animal food than people food.

But that painful part does suck. Within a few months after moving in with my g/f (now my wife) and her parents, I had to bury 2 dogs that got hit by cars. A third got attacked by pit bulls, and eventually died. But for the companionship, loyalty, and protection, you can't beat a good dog.

Our chessie (less than a year old) already follows me around, and is extremely protective of my family. I couldn't imagine not having him.

Oh, I'm sorry!

I know how much it hurts.

Of course it's still worth it!

After all the years you spend together, all the funny stories, all the silliness.

They're just like people, everyone is going to die eventually.

but would you give up the people in your life just because the will eventually die?

No! Don't even question it.

It's hard, but all the time you had together is well worth it!

We had to put our Lab down a few months ago. She was the most loyal dog I have ever come across. It was worth having her while we did.

Is life worth it?

Is love worth it?

Is modding an Rx7 worth it?

All of these things (including pets) comes to an end...

...but to quote Meet Joe Black "You see, there is no sense in living your life without this. To make the journey and not fall deeply in love...well...you haven't lived a life at all. You have to try, because if you haven't tried, you haven't lived."

You have to weigh out the joy of ownership vs. the heartache of losing that pet. I think the joy outweighs the loss. As well, we can always hold memories, and while not "replacable"...I am sure now there is room for another puppy.

So, In short.....YES https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

I lost my dog when I was 12 years old and cried for days. It was a 6 y/o German Shepard that was a total family member. The dog was so smart and protective of us kids. We loved it like it was a child in our family. We all swore we would never get another dog and subject ourselves to that pain again.

Then my dad brought home a mutt on Holoween night that was wandering the streets. He was afraid some kids would hurt it. So we kept it for the night. Then the next night and the next. WE could never locate the owner. My mom discovered it had been beaten because it would cowar ot the sight of a broom. So we decided it was betteroff with us. It lived 15 years then we had to put it down. I was sad but not tore up like the Shepard.

You have to look at pets like Phins looks at life. They are chapters in your life. Just remember all the good times you had with that dog and be happy it had a loving home to live in.

My wife and son came home with a Choc. Lab 2 years ago after I said NO DOGS! Of course it stayed and I love it. I have never had a dog that wants to be next to you at all times. Its most happy sleeping at your feet. I yelled at my wife because now my 10 y/o son is going to feel the heartbreak of a family pet dying. I didn't want him to go through that. Pure breeds dont last long and I hope this Choc. Lab can make it to 8 or 10.

He's talking about having to put a pet down, and you're joking about his username. How about pretending not to be an ******* for a little while...
