i got a ticket for "improper devices" for a "smelly exhaust"

convo went something like this :

hello officer what is the problem

"youre exhaust seems to be very loud and smells pretty bad, i can smell the fumes"

its stock, except for the muffler

"well i could probably smell that thing from a mile away kid, you smell that?"

yes

"thats carbon monoxide"

no, thats fuel and oil

"why is there such a bad smell coming from your car. it must not be legal"

sir, its stock

"well then you have a problem there, i suggest you bring it to a gas station and get it tested"

sir, its completely fine i know more about my car than you do or most gas stations do, my engine runs naturally rich and i just did an oil change so its burning a little of the excess oil

"do you have a receipt for your oil change"

i did it myself - do you want to see the old filter and empty oil quarts at my house

"dont get wise with me son"

dont harass me because im a kid, my car is legal and theres no reason i should be having this discussion with you right now

"wait here a minute kid"

comes back 5 mins later with ticket:

"here, pay this and be happy i didnt give you other tickets"

other tickets for what? i dont deserve a ticket as it is

"i have to go now - dont complain about the ticket and just pay it"

then he leaves

so i will go to court on 8/6 like the ticket says and will bring my FSM and Haynes Manuals to show them, along with that i will bring 4 empty quarts of castrol and an old smelly oil filter

in conclusion ---- police officers should suck my ****

Carbon monoxide is odorless...

I almost got a ticket today, but the Iowa trooper must not've cared that I was going 93 in a 65.

I was amazed we didnt get pulled over on the way to Rotorfest. Before the motor blew, some schmuck in a Maxima was trying to race us and we were doing about 130 to get away from the dude...he was tailgating us at like 95mph. I remember one of the last times I got pulled over, I was driving the Rustang GT I used to have, out in AZ or CO and I wasn't paying attention to the speedometer (out in the desert) and suddenly I'm trying to explain why I was going 150mph. Trooper let me off with a verbal warning, and he was a nice guy, too.

I def. think that "smelly exhaust" is not enough probablr cause to get pulled over though...that's bullSHITE! Let 'em know who's boss, eh?!

Baldy 07-01-2003 08:11 AM

I've always said that you should pay tickets for laws you broke. But that's some serious BS. That guy had no idea what he was talking about. I don't know how it is in states with emissions testing, but I haven't heard of any crap like that happening here.

rfreeman27 07-01-2003 08:41 AM

hwat a crock of bull. take his ass down man!

Erik 07-01-2003 08:48 AM

sux man...had you managed to get an inspection sticker? or did he not notice the absensce of one?

christi 07-01-2003 12:25 PM

LOL ..... I find that highly funny. I never knew you could smell Carbon mon. ?

You guys must have really strict emission testings...... I'm notsure of that stuff, FL doesn't have them here.

(I am actually for that law)

94touring 07-01-2003 12:36 PM

Oklahoma doesn't even have any kind of safety inspections. You should see all exhaustless vehicles around here. Perfect place for a rotary.

Soldier’s ticket speedily dismissed

Associated Press

WICHITA, Kan. — An apologetic letter from Pfc. Carlos Nunez was enough to get a $185 speeding ticket dismissed and refunded — that and the letter’s North Baghdad, Iraq, return address.

On April 6, Nunez was on his way to Fort Riley, Kan., to prepare for deployment. He was ticketed on a north Wichita interstate for driving 84 mph in a 60 mph zone, a court clerk said.

Nunez, who was assigned to Alpha Battery, 4th Battalion, 1st Field Artillery at Fort Riley, sent a letter to explain why he hadn’t handled the ticket earlier.

“I am sorry I haven’t paid any of your fines, but for the last month, there has been no mail, no phone calls, no nothing,” Nunez said in the letter. “Please accept the check and thank you for your gracefulness.”

Traffic court clerk Sue Ingram spotted the letter and took it upstairs to Judge Paul Clark. Clark, whose grandson served in the military, said he understood the Nunez’s communication difficulties. The judge decided his service trumped the speeding ticket.

“One seems to outweigh the other when you really get to look at it,” Clark said. “I thought that it was an indication of good citizenship to send his letter apologizing to us because it’s late.”

Clark passed it along to District Attorney Nola Foulston, who immediately signed the ticket and dismissed it. All the court workers involved signed a greeting card and enclosed Nunez’ $185 check.

Foulston added her own personal message: “Please drive safely in Baghdad.”
