Fuckers went down big time, walmart dropped the low end model to $98 for the toshiba, i went to circuit city and got another 10% off. Anyhow, love the HDMI output, even makes reguar DVD's look 10 times better. It will be interesting to see which is the next betamax, however the cheapest blue ray player is still sitting at 400 or so.
but how much more are the disks themselves?
it really depends, most of them are around $20, i rarely buy them to be honest I just rent and they don't charge any extra at netflix.
What type of cables does it use, component video? Or is there something new that my TV will need?
HDMI is your best bet, you can also use component hd cables, but HDMI seems to be the latest and greatest in the HD market.
Oh, I don't think my set has plugs for that. Oh well, I guess that's another $100 I can save for other crap.
If you have HD tv inputs u can still run it, if you dont have an hd tv then hd dvd is pretty much useless. Most of the LCD's i have seen have DVI or HDMI inputs as well as component hd inputs.
98 bucks? Wow, that's a good price!
Most of the HD movies are from 20-30 bucks, so it's not too bad. I gotta see if I have HDMI on my TV. |
Blue Ray FTW!!
Like I could tell HD from standard video. I'm not investing a dollar in any newfangled HDTV until I get new glasses!

"older hd-dvd titles"
Okay, this is a joke, right? If they were older, they'd be on betamax or vhs! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.gif |

BTW, the tv's are color now

Get out! |
What ever the porn industry chooses I'll buy, I still have to try to sell my Betamaxx, and LaserDisc.
Oh i also wanted to note that the hd-dvd's come with dvd format on the flip side... so if you are on the fence and wanna buy a new dvd you can go ahead an buy the hd version... btw this is not the case with blue ray

Good to know. I am going to look into one when I run into some extra cash. Does the HDMI give a better picture and sound over the Component Video?? That's my only small concern |
It's supposed to be slightly better picture and definetely better sound, although compared to the fibre output the same. If that makes any sense. I must admit I doubted there would be any difference in picture quality, but even from dvd to hd-dvd its a noticable difference, and here is where i noticed it... the shading, around objects and people faces it almost as a 3d effect because you see actual shadows from the object on the items around it. very cool
Does it make blacks and dark colors show up any richer? Like on a movie in a night scene, the sky or background may be black, fading to dark blue, and I can usually see where the shades change. Make sense? Or is that just my TV, and not the DVD?

Hmmm, you have me convinced. I will have to get one for the folks for Christmas. And you said they can play both formats? HD-DVD and reg. DVD? AWESOME! |
Yes, actually they bump up the res on regular dvd's, some of the regular dvd players do this now, it will make a reg dvd look a little better at 1080p, but not near as good as the hd-dvd's
What model did you get? I'm all over the internets trying to find something inexpensive, and all I can find are "upconverting" players that offer only "1080i-like" performance.

But what if my TV is not 1080p? I need to do some more research on this before I buy one. |
if its hd, it should be 1080i or 1080p, if not then you wont get much of anything out of the hd gear, even hdtv as that is higher resolution 480 vs 1080
1080i or was it 1080p is what just recently came out. well, the TV is HD, so it's one of the two. it's about....3 years old now.
there's very little difference, same res one is interlaced the other progressive scan
**** now i need to go buy a color tv in light of this threads information..
Anyone know if a 1080i TV works well as a computer display?
works fine as long as the graphics card supports the resolution. I used to have an alienware hooked to my 1080i
Yeah, I'll make sure of that. HP is offering a DVD drive that can read HD-DVD and Bluray, seems like a safe way to play it at this point.

my friend uses a hdtv as a computer monitor. you might have to bump up the windows dpi thing to be able to read. it just makes the font bigger really. it works great. and the divx stage6 thing can stream in hdtv, so weve watched a couple streaming hd trailers on it, and its in real hd and its great. he also has his hooked up to cable. so he can switch back and forth of picture in picture the TV on a channel while having the computer taking up the main screen. |
So supposedly Wally World is selling a 1080p upconverter DVD player for 30 bucks on black friday. Yay or nay?
Its not really hd, the hddvd player i have upconverts, its still not near as good as an hd-dvd, if you need a new dvd player then i'd say its worth it, if not then i would wait for an hd-dvd player or similar.
Cool, thanks Phins.
