due to global warming the temperature today is 46, vs the average of about 55.



this warming WILL melt the ice caps by 2001, if something isn't done about it!



i think we all need to rally around, and have ribbons or something, to show how much we care about this.

This has been a really strange winter, REALLY strange. I am big into weather, i guess because I sail and I've spent a lot of time trying to figure it out (no of course I haven't succeeded). Anyhow, you very, very rarely see winds out of the south, if they are out of the south they are light. This year we have had HEAVY winds 25 to 35 mph direct out of the south. not to mention record cold temps.

Its very strange that SoCal is getting pounded with this much rain, usually its Portland through Seattle along the 5 that sees all the rain this time of year.

The barometer has been pinned @ 28.75 for two days now yet it hasn't rained hardly at all, the sun is out and its damn near 50 today

yeah its been raining for like a week!

They said most places in SOCal and Southern Nevada have gotten more rain in 4 days than they got all last year! Build an ark I say! With the fallout from wildfires earlier in the year the hills have to be straining to hold thier own weight.

We've had record-breaking lows here for several weeks at a time. We had ice that stayed ice from one night to the next, I don't remember seeing that since I moved here in '89.



It warms up, and we just had a serious rain storm. Areas that rarely flood, were flooded. Some spots got 3"-4" in an hour, that is an INSANE amount of rain in a short time span, tropical storms and major summer storms here don't drop that much rain.



It's also been real breezy here the last couple months, and usually the wind barely blows in this area.



It's been an interesting few months!

I noticed the weird things happening in the Southeast too, the Arctic blast that dipped clear down to the tip of Florida, very rare along with the weather coming right out of the south. Usually you guys get most of your weather from the east, off the Atlantic, mostly due to the flatness of the Sahara and corresponding wind patterns, no?

Whats hilarious, yet tragic at the same time, is that people tend to scale their perception to their localized area. Just because your area is seeing a cold front doesn't mean that's whats happening around the world. The earth is a big place, keep that in mind. Whether you want to believe it or not, the arctic ice caps are melting at an extremely rapid rate. Picture this, the Northwest passage - the passage that connects the Atlantic to the Pacific from the north. From the dawn of human history that passage has been almost completely closed year round. Many explorers tried to make their passages and ended up losing their lives because of the ice pack.



In the last 5 years, the passage has opened up so much that its being looked at as a major passage for cargo ships.



There is new ice and old ice, the new ice forms and retreats every year, the old ice, as the name suggests, is a semi-permanent ice pack. The old ice has shrunk by almost half in the last 100 years. That is cause for concern. The fresh, cold water, introduced into the saltwater currents will fall lower than the warm water, changing currents both on top and bottom of the ocean. That is also a huge cause for concern since plays a HUGE roll in our weather systems.



The world is dynamic and will work itself out with or without human intervention, but for the preservation of our current state, its probably beneficial that we take precautions to slow its accelerated rate. How many of you know about trash island? An mass of garbage spread to the size of Texas x2 drifting in the north pacific, brought together by naturally occurring tides. I've been able to see it with my own eyes, not a very endearing sight.



I am also part of a climate change research team partnered with NOAA and various other agencies, we attended the climate change summit this year in Copenhagen and my company is designated to photo and video document some of the newest arctic water samples taken in the past 7 years. A coalition of several top leading scientists from around the world will be working on our boat as we make the first voyage through the Northwest passage in a 110' crab boat (modified research platform).

Get outta here with your "science"! If I have to turn my heater on more than 2 days in a row, it's freaking colder than it should be! I had to explain to my son how icicles form, he shouldn't exposed to such craziness at an early age.

One good blast of solar radiation could do that in less than one year, ice cores have shown this to be true. Global warming and cooling is a natural cycle that varies in every way. Just becasue we are self aware as a species hardly means we are running this planet one way or another. Earth could give a damn about us and what we do.

While I admit that global warming is a pressing concern for all the inhabitants of this world, it truly pales in comparison to the pressing problem of the availability of good free internet porn.

That's true, but you can't deny the direct impact that we have on the eco system. Everything we create and dump back into the planet came from the planet to begin with, so its not like we are bringing in anything that wasn't already here. We have just accelerated certain destructive chain reactions by converting materials and gases into deadly (to most life) toxins.

I think a lot of folks are on the profiteering bandwagon and have been for a long time. Al Gore seems to be a main target for that. An interesting tid bit about the future of containing carbon emissions through industry is this... Another capitalistic system, but it might have some good impact. Maybe. Who knows...



Carbon banks have been going on in Euroland for some time and are being kicked up and going to be taken a lot more seriously. United States is soon to follow and I would assume that all UN countries will be following suit. The idea is this, an overall carbon quota is handed out for certain industries. Say, 100,000,000,000 tons of carbon emissions a year will be allowed for freight industry. As it is right now, they produce 100,500,000,000 tons, which means they are 500 million tons over their quota. They will need to either cut that much (by becoming more efficient (new technology), stop running as many freighters, etc..) *OR* they can then trade and lease quota from other industries/businesses to make up for their overage. Which means, company x with a quota of 100,000 a year doesnt do anything can now take that imaginary carbon quota and LEASE it to company y for x amount of dollars so company y doesn't go over on their quota and get fined by the government.



The idea is that the overall quotas will slowly decrease over the years forcing industry to become more efficient. Great idea sure... but pretty idealistic if you ask me.



Lots of false companies will take advantage of the system and quota will become stacked with large industry. Smaller companies wont have to work because the owners are being paid a huge lease fee for their quota. The large industry still expels large amounts of carbon and the global government takes everyones money. yaaay capitalism!



BUT - if you're smart you will know that you wont change the policy by yourself, so you might as well profit from it, right? Thanks to Obama we are dishing out even more money we dont have to "new eco friendly technology". Which means you can get a grant easier than ever for a few million a year, make some stupid ass ****, make some false claims and BAM you're good to go. Then when the industries in America have to start conforming to these carbon bank rules, you will be sitting on a "technology" that the industry will be forced to buy, leading you to more sales and more money.



And that, is how you become a multi millionaire in 5 years and save the world! ... in your mind.
