Okay.....it has been about a month now and I have seriously been considering joining the NAVY. I know alot of you here are in the military and I am looking for some advice. Do any of you regret it? Once you sign the paper thats it. Four years.....Its hard for me to think about that but it sounds like a challenge and sounds fun. It would be really great if some of yall could give me advice. Would I be wasting my time if I was already accepted to a University and had money to pay for it. I want to hear more about what it really is and not what I see on tv and what the recruiter told me.

Jerk_Racer 03-20-2003 09:52 PM

That four years flys by and you'll have done stuff during then that will sound like tall tales and BS stories to your non-military buddies. No regrets here. Go into an interview for a job once you get out with military experience on your resume and you'll be sure to get the job. It has worked for me so far, at least when I'm up against others that weren't in the military. But the military isn't for everybody. But if you do go in, don't expect zilch. It's what you make of it. Get everything in writing, recruiters are like used car salesmen.

But the Navy is full of squiddly diddlies. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif Step up to a real military branch and join the Corps.

Joe Flo 03-20-2003 11:15 PM

What does this mean? Can you elaborate......I am mostly looking for the health benefits, trainging and money for school.

Step up to a real military branch and join the Corps.
I took the test that you have to take. I qualified for the SEAL's program. He said if I want to go through the training he can put it in the contract. Might take him up on that. Looks extremly hard and I am looking for a challenge. Probably wont make it but I want to try.

lane_change 03-21-2003 12:39 AM

I am from a Marine Corps family...both of my parents are USMC retired. From my experience with military life now that I am 22, I say go Air Force if you want the best of everything, PX, Commisary, Rec Centers, Mess Halls, etc...go Marine Corps if you want a tough career but a rewarding career. Never go Navy unless you plan on becoming a SEAL but if you fail to become a SEAL and become another Sailor....well, **** that. Sorry to you Navy guys on here, just my opinion, and the Army....well....what to say about the army?......Hmmmm...not much...kind of blah. I say Marine Corps for the challenge that you are looking for. They have the fastest promotions among the military branches and you become part of something bigger than you. Sign up, go to college for 4 years on their bill, then do your 4 years in the service and if you get out, you will have 8 years of USMC experience, or if you stay in, you will only have to 16 years of service duty until you retire with 20 years of service....or stay in as long as you want. That much is up to you. But I say Air Force if you want to be pampered...the Corps if you want a challenge....Navy if you plan on being a SEAL...or Army...well, go coast guard instead of Army. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

my_jdm_rx7 03-21-2003 01:26 AM

Well said Scotty. And I just want to take this moment to say, Marines kick ass...no really, my brother is over in Iraq right now chewing bubble gum and kicking ass...and he's running low on gum. Im like you tho, I can't even imagine what my life would be like in the Corps....I'm a puss I guess..just the idea of alot of authority(yeah, right..), getting yelled at all the time, and living up to someone elses standards? Nah. My bro loves it, as well as other friends in the Corps...just not for me....even though going to Okinawa and buying/selling parts/cars, and rollin' in an R33/99 spec7 would kick ass..

blondeRX7babe 03-21-2003 02:07 AM

I have a couple of friends (mostly army boys) also hanging out in dust bowl central (Iraq for you slow people) and they don't regret it, although i have a boyfriend in the states training for Sgt. And the only thing he wishes he did was sign up for two years and then increased his contract as he went along. just to keep his options open. I have been out to his base and hung out. And i do admit the people in the army that are fresh outta high school are trying to clean up a bit, straighten out their screwed up life and get free school. but otheriwse it's highschool all over again. least that's my take on it, girls gossiping, guys sleeping around, and other he said she said bullshit. but like JERK RACER said it's what you make of it. Just pick your friends wisely. wink wink, my only friend woul dbe my seven. i also have thought about inlisting. though thats more b/c io wonder if i'm capable of it. well i guess we'll see.

anyhow read the small print before signing the dotted line.

Joe Flo 03-21-2003 08:40 AM

I know about the Air Force and how easy it is. My close friend joined. And then I also know about the marines because my cousins was in it. But I want to go out to sea and see the world. I am sure you do this in the other branches but I would really like to live on the ship for a while. It is hard for me to make this desicion since I am pretty lazy. I want to break this habbit and make something of myself. Just not sure if I want to go to college yet. My Uncle who is like my second father was an Officer in the NAVY. SO I know only about the easy life. I want to know the life of an enlisted man

LannyRX7 03-21-2003 09:00 AM

Man I was in the Army... Military Intelligence. The Army is like the middle of all of the branches...it's not too hard and it's not easy. So when he said it's kind of blah...he's right.

The Navy...please don't join the navy. I don't know you very well but I have at least met you in real life. I can tell your probably not the type of person who would like to have a name tag on your ass (literally). They got some good uniforms but if you happen to get stuck on a ship.. well there goes alot of your life. When people who were in the navy say "I went to Japan once" well they did, BUT They went for like 2 days and didn't really get to enjoy it cause they had to work. A bunch of my friends are joining the navy and I have no idea why.

Air Force..hell that's the way to go. They get the best of everything! They pay for most, if not all of your school. Best barracks, best food, laid back officers and NCOs, it's pretty sweet. And during PT (physical training) if you get hurt running you can ride a bike behind the formation (tell me another branch that can do that). Aim freaking high, If I went back in...that's what I'd do. Plus their uniforms are the sh*t.

Marines... I give props to all marines. Alot of those marine chicks could probably whip my ass. If you like being hardcore and love pullups this is the way to go. They get treated crappy, worst barracks, worst food (unless on air force base https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR ) and I'm not sure about their schooling ops. But if you want to come home twice as big as when you left and be all buffed up this is the way to go man.

And if you want the real hardcore stuff go Navy Seals or Army Ranger...but if you don't get through the programs...well your stuck.

Just my .02

LannyRX7 03-21-2003 09:01 AM

Most recruiters won't lie... they just don't tell you the whole truth. Make sure you keep clean underwear on during boot camp... no body likes trench-nuts.

https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif

Joe Flo 03-21-2003 10:06 AM

Everybody is saying that the NAVY isn't the way to go but noone is really saying why. The recruiter flat out told me that he couldn't promise me anything in the contract right now except the chance at the SEALs program. He also told me that when you go out on a long tour that when the ship is in port you are free to do whatever. But when the ship goes back inot the ocean its back to work. I don't mind getting stuck on a ship in fact I look foward to it since I like doing that already. Just really looking for an adventure and schooling before I go to college.

LannyRX7 03-21-2003 10:12 AM

Well the main reason most people don't like the navy is because of the whole stuck on a ship thing. I personally don't like the name tag on the ass thing. Also I don't like the navy cause my Step-mom the drunk was in the navy and I don't like her. Maybe bad reasons but they're mine.

If you like ship tours for like 6 months at a time and don't mind the whole Gay sailor stereotype with the ass name tag. Check out the schooling and go for it. The guys I know who are going in to the navy aren't gonna goto college.

gazellis 03-21-2003 11:07 AM

I am going to put my little two cents in here. My brother is in the military, specifically the Navy. He is now on reserve after 12 years active duty. He loved every moment of it. You do not have to be a SEAL to love it either.

He is now a Lt. Commander. He is a naval aviator. He flew F-18 Hornets. He was based in some great places and was on many different aircraft carriers. Had a blast. He served over Bosnia and had some close calls too so it was not all fun and games.

He now works for Northropp Grumman on the Joint Strike Fighter Program and will probably be a test pilot for it. His last and current duty as reserve is as a Top Gun instructor at Navy Fallon in Fallon Nevada. He goes one week out of every month to train the Navy pilots to do what they do. He flies F-5's now in the Aggressor squadron at Fallon. Most of the pilots overseas now went through training with his squadron at Fallon.

It is a rewarding career for those who want to do it. I am very proud of my brother, maybe that is why I put my little 2 cents in.

My Uncle had the same rank but retired. I have gone to the bases with him and they are great. He also flew and loved it alot. He also has alot of stories from the different places that he has been. I am not really into flying but instead just want to be on the boat. Did your brother go to school while on board or just full time navy man.

Baldy 03-21-2003 11:52 AM

a little off topic, but I have a question. If there is an aircraft carrier, it's for the navy, right? what about the planes on the carrier? are they part of the navy or air force?

can't you tell my thorough military education? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/rolleyes.gif

teknics 03-21-2003 12:22 PM

i think planes on the aircraft carrier are considered navy since they have naval pilots.

kevin.

Joe Flo 03-21-2003 12:39 PM

Correct. Navy gets the cool planes. Which is way every plane in TOP GUN said Navy on the wings https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

banzaitoyota 03-21-2003 02:40 PM

Never Go Navy??? What an idiotic thing to say. As a Ex-Navy Nuke working as a Designer I make MORE than the Degreed Engineers above me. BTW: We let the Army have a reactor back in 1961;Guess what happened?: They blew the Fucker up!!!! Stupid Ground-Pounders..

Stupid ARMY!!!!

Jerk_Racer 03-21-2003 06:28 PM

Air Force - you want to do college

Navy - you want to see the world

Army - you are patriotic

Marine Corps - you don't fit in anywhere else and/or want to be the first kid on your block with a confirmed kill https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

(if you couldn't tell by now, I served in the Corps)

Air Force is good. They have the best quality of life of all the branches. I had some guys in a couple of my college classes on base that attended school in uniform. I asked one of them once why. He told me he had to get a degee as a part of his schooling. I'm not sure what his job was going to be, but that's not a bad deal if you want to go to college.

When I say to not expect anyting, I mean don't have any pre-conceived notions of what you should get. I knew plenty of guys that bitched and moaned about being screwed over by their recruiters and how being in the Marine Corps wasn't what they expected. I went in with no expectations and got a lot out of it that way. Lots of good experiences and good training.

If you want a particular job field then get it in writing. Don't sign up when the recruiter tells you things such as "we'll see about it later" or stuff to that extent.

As far as your time in the service, those will be (or at least should be) the best years of your life. Make them good ones even if you only plan on staying in for one enlistment.

Uniforms? There are none better than the Marine Corps Dress Blues. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

mazdaspeed101 03-21-2003 06:44 PM

im in the air force and it is the easiest, it is friday and i have been at work for 2 hours and i am going to be going home in an 1 hour. The air force is easy but there alot of political bullshit that goes with it, if you join sign for 4 years i signed for 6 and i could have already been out. Plus the air force has the most girls out of all the branches.

Midnightdriver 03-21-2003 10:19 PM

every service has its good points and bad points. Its all what YOU make of it...I've been navy and now I'm Army Nat. guard....some things are better in the navy like food..base locations and travle...the army is the easyiest place to get lots of training..easy to switch jobs and learn a new skill...Navy the one you pick is it..until you finish your first 4 years then TRY to strike for another...Also the army guard has civi. jobs you can get that pay pretty good.. now if you want to be a (JAR HEAD hahah had to use it..) Marine thats good but you have the least freedom of all services but you do get the best physical training and it is the fastest service to make rank in.. now the air force is a more thinking mans service..with the least amount of physical training..but they have the best bases...or I should say the highest living standard.. and short deployments. you can also stay at one base for much longer that any other service.. I got lucky when I was in the navy got based in san dog then japan loved it...while in jpn I visited so many places I'd have never been able to see. but over all I'd not change a thing I've done....service did me good.. if you do go take a good look at your friends now...then take a good look at them in 2 or 3 years...it will be a wake up call.

Joe Flo 03-21-2003 11:36 PM

I am glad that everyone has said the same thing. Turns out one of the guys I worked with was in the NAVY. I had already been looking up to him since I considered him to be the smartest of all the engineers. Everyone I have talked to said it has been the greatest thing in their life. Right now with all that I have heard I am 99% sure I am going to do this. ONe more question though!!!! What did yall do with your seven while in the military?? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif

Jerk_Racer 03-23-2003 06:11 AM

I'm sure he is the smartest engineer. The military likes to get intelligent people to enlist. Intelligent, highly motivated types go as far as they want to go if they apply themselves.

I shipped out at the end of summer after I graduated. I wanted to have one last summer of fun. I had a '79 Dodge Aspen at the time so I just dumped it. Hey, don't judge me harshly. I didn't know jack about cars then and it was the midwest so there weren't too many cars aside from domestics. Plus, a car from '79 wasn't that old back then.

Whatever branch you go into, you'll be a better you when you get out.

Midnightdriver 03-23-2003 03:16 PM

you 7 will be a p.o.v private owned vehic... what you do is after boot camp and A school...well actually in a school you can bring your car with you and the military will transport it for you to someplaces or they will pay you extra money to move if you are going to do it yourself...what you do is when your in A school find your transportaion officer and they will tell you how to move your car.

Air force! Air force! Air force! dont let anyone tell you different! I am a groundpounder and I agree with lane change they have the best of everything!!!!!! even women!!!! nicest bases, best schools, and easiest PT standards.

Joe Flo 03-23-2003 10:41 PM

To be honest I started looking into the airforce but I can't figure out what they actually do. I know they fly planes but what does an enlisted person do?

They sit around and wait for someone higher in the food chain to retire or die so they can advance. Air Force has the slowest advancement of any of the services. Plus the Air FARCE likes to deceive Congress. When the AF builds a base they go in , build the housing, rec centers, clubs and hobby shops. Then they run back to congress and say OOPS WE forgot to build the runways!!!!
