I am going into my freshman year at UCF and i have talked to a lot of greeks and they all say its an awesome thing to do. Im probably not going to rush this fall but im doing summer so i can talk to some more of the frat dudes. I also met some of the sorority chicks and o my god they are really hot. I just went up to orientation and am overwhelmed by chickas. Either way college is going to kick ass but i just wanted to see some peoples thoughts on, suggestions, and comments of the frat life.

Rush in the fall. You will have more time your first semester to do everything the fraternity requires.

frats suck .. you shouldn't have to buy your friends

FD3S DRIFT 05-25-2004 11:42 PM

i am already friends with a lot of people over there so im not really buying my friends. If i were to join it would be mostly for the socials with the sororities and for job apps because a lot of people of power are frat guys and it will get you the job if it comes down to you and the other guy.

boxrs4sale 05-26-2004 12:41 AM

it won't get you a job

It will do more than get you a job...you will make connections with people that will be there for you and help you with whatever you need.

It is NOT buying your friends. Only a small percentage of your dues go to the national chapter. The rest go straight to the fraternity and you as a member get to decide how that money gets spent.

Being a member of a fraternity is one of the best ways to learn politics and social skills beyond any other public forum.

think what you want.

i have friends in frats that are graduating with me.

i am in much better shape than them job wise.. i would never waste $700 a semester.. or about $1400 a year.. thats rediculous.. and most of the time your committed to live at least one year in the frat house, which would suck complete ass.

all that you hear about having millions of connections and being able to get the best job is complete bs. don't you realize that when you go for interviews in the real world, you don't just interview with your frat buddy ? 99% of the time you go through 3 interviews. i just went through 4 for my job. unless he has a ton of pull in the company, can he only get you the job.

all that brotherhood stuff.. a complete crock of ****..

a frat is just an excuse to buy into friends, meet chicks, and get drunk... i went to a couple rush meetings, and their is an expense for every little thing you do.

if you suck at meeting friends, just want to get drunk and screw girls a lot, or feel insecure without having 30 people around you all the time, then join a frat... but if you are your own person, and don't have a problem meeting people, and realize that there is more to live than getting shitfaced all the time, then don't.

boxrs4sale....

You feel pretty passionate against fraternities and fraternity life. What happened to give you this attitude? Were you ever a member of one and then quit or had to quit or were made to quit? Or are you just looking at this from the outside as to how you viewed certain fraternities and fraternity members? Maybe it changed some of your friends and that upset you? I am just curious where your feelings are coming from. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and you are definitely entitled to yours. I do not understand, though, how you can make the statement that the brotherhood is a complete crock of **** unless you have experienced it and it wasn't for you, so where does that statement come from? Enlighten us.

I was in a fraternity and I had the best time of my life at the time. I did not feel I was buying friends because I had plenty outside of the fraternity. And in fact a majority of my time after Rush was spent with my friends outside the fraternity. The fraternity life was just a different way to experience college life. It is not for everyone, definitely. People also join fraternities for different reasons. I personally joined to help me get a good start socially and educationally in the school. That sounds like insecurity and maybe it was but it sure did help me get off on the right foot. I am not saying everyone needs them for that reason but it helped me.

My fraternity was not a way to gain connections for jobs or otherwise because I own my own business and did not need any help with that.

People choose their own path through college life. That is the one great thing about college is that you gain an incredible education in life that has nothing to do with the classwork.

There is nothing right or wrong with fraternity life. It is just a choice and it is not for everyone. It was for me and I loved it.

Dysfnctnl85 05-27-2004 05:34 PM

Yes you definitely sound like you had a really, really bad experience or you know a lot of shallow people.

My fraternity has none of the qualities you have mentioned.

And as for being in the real world, most of us in my fraternity already are...we co-op.

Also, I can live in the house now and I've only been in the fraternity for two semesters. But, I don't think I'd be able to concentrate. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png
