そんな情況を踏まえて3代目のFD3Sは発表された。

1991年10月。

予定を少し早めた感のある市場投入は、バブル期に一斉に開花した和製スーパースポーツを意識した結果だった のかもしれない。新設なったTI英田サーキットを舞台に行なわれたプレス試乗会は、やはり記憶に残るものだ った。

より低くワイドに構えた表情豊かなスタイリングに驚きながらステアリングを手にすると、4.90のパワーウ エイトレシオと50:50の前後重量配分がさらに切れ味鋭い走りで迫ってくる。255馬力に高められた13 B-REWエンジンは、当時のRE技術の限界に近いレベルに達していると説明された。重いローターを8000r pm まで回す難しさについては、十分想像することができたし、もちろんその走りに不満を覚えることもなかった。 ただしRE開発エンジニアだけは、その数値に満足していなかったようである。4年半後の96年1月に265 馬力、そして98年12月にはついに280馬力の大台に乗せることに成功してしまう。

エンジンの技術内容については別項に譲ろうと思うが、このパワーアップに合わせたシャシーのチューニングと それがもたらすハンドリングの仕上がりは、量産スポーツカーのエキスパートとしてのマツダに相応しいセット アップといえた。90年代に入ってからの私の関心事は、資源環境安全というクルマが抱える根源的なテーマに 移っていったが、そこにはクルマを楽しむための技術としてという大前提があった。RX-7が歩んできた道のりは、常にクルマにとっての最大の魅力である走る楽しさの追求とともにあった 。

社会の変化に柔軟に対応しながら、世界で唯一のREスポーツの魅力をいかにして高めて行くか。 RX-7が他のスポーツカーと明らかに異なってみえるのは、REという存続が危うい存在ならではの潔さと、だから こそ強まる意志によって開発が進められているからだ。よくよく考えてみると、REの存続は内燃機関で走るす べてのクルマの未来と重なっている。私がRX-7と深く関わりたいと思っているのは、多分そのことが気になっているからだ。

「REにはまだまだ未来があります。」

私は、そう断言したエンジニアの言葉を信じたいと思っている。

ここまで来たらRX-7のこれからも追わないわけには行かないだろう。
