Found a black/white female Italian Greyhound (or maybe a small Whippet) cowering behind a bush in the fenced corner of the yard tonight... She's a sweetheart, but scared as hell of all people, and obviously not used to a collar and leash. Kinda hope the owners don't claim her!

Is she scared when you handle her? Will she just cower (try and curl up in a ball)

I used to train dogs for a shelter and we would get dogs like that a lot (that were terrified of people & would cower)

Not all dogs become comfortable with people but most do if placed in a foster home. It usually takes about 2 weeks for them to "warm up"

She is really pretty! Keep us updated on her!

She will let me handle her with almost zero resistance, but when she's allowed to roam around the house she hides behind furniture and under beds and such. She won't respond to any verbal commands or cues, but will follow warily behind me as I move through the house. When she's on-leash outside, she tries to pull it off and run away.. Any quick gestures frighten her into submission, so I've been taking it slow with her. She seems clean and tick/flea free, save for a bit of dandruff. Think I'll probably give her a bath tonight after I go put out flyers.

Sounds like she's been treated like ****, not sure i would want to let the owners know you found her. She's beautiful though.

I have an obligation to seek them out, even if I'm afraid for her.

I've been reading online and apparently it's not uncommon for lost dogs to be scared and thin, even if they've only been lost a short time.

besides thier names my dogs wont respond to comands from a stranger.

They also dont wear collars, but they do like walks on thier leash.

Except the little one we rescued- he is very skittish but he always likes to hang around, he never did

hide behind anything, just checked you out from his distance. Only in the last few weeks does he

come over and let you pet him without being under a blanket.

Get a blanket and let her under there and I bet she sleeps like a baby.

She really doesn't look all that thin to me for a greyhound anyhow.

this little guy is thin, he has gained a pound or so, which is alot considering he only weighed 7.5 when we got him- he is fully grown too.

Maybe sprinkle some chilli powder on those dogs asses so they can grow some nuts!

Rob x-7 02-27-2008 07:34 AM

maybe if you were abused and neglected your whole life you would be scared too
