75 Repu 09-12-2008 09:30 PM

maybe i'll stick some wines in there then.. but if i do use it for wine I would imagine that it is not to store permanently right? just for that day?

When you store wine the bipoducts of sitting (grape stuffs) will set at the bottom of the bottle. A decanter is used to filter that **** out I think.

I should think the decanter would come in handy if you were to serve, say a nice box of wine with dinner, and did not want to surrender the large amount of table space that would be occupied by the boxes rather gargantuan footprint.

Correct. However most wines produced after 1990 have so little seddiment in them that they don't need to be decanted. However decanting also serves another purpose; by having a larger surface area in the bottom of the decanter, the wine can breath easier. This allows the wine which hasn't seen air in however long, to begin to interact with it again. Give it a few good swirls to make sure that all of the wine is getting exposure.
