And I just heard on the radio that the prices of plywood have risen as much as 100% in some markets.

I'm the red dot.

Jims5543 09-12-2003 09:30 AM

How would you like to be me right now. Pucker factor in full effect.

I am 2 miles from the ocean. Mazdadrifter lives here too he is further from the ocean though he is 3 miles.

Sinful7 09-12-2003 09:37 AM

that's weak.

Baldy 09-12-2003 09:48 AM

damn jim, that sucks. On the radio, they said forecasters said it might downgrade to a 3, since they rarely hold a 5 for a long period of time. But, they said, they never know for sure.

Thats sustained winds. Gusts could easily exceed 200 MPH.

I am more worried about all the tornados these storms spawn off.

Baldy 09-12-2003 09:55 AM

Just looked up information on hurrican Andrew of '95 (I think)...

Maximum wind speed (Florida) 145 mph sustained, 175 mph gusts

75 Repu 09-12-2003 10:00 AM

Sucks.. and blows.. all in one..

Jims5543 09-12-2003 10:16 AM

I will be spending the weekend getting ready before the masses do. I plan on stocking up on fuel, provisions etc..

I am also going to start boarding up my house.

I have not decided where I am running to yet. Possibly Atlanta maybe a little trip to the mountains. HMMMM maybe I'll oad the 7 up on the car trailer and take it to western South Carolina.

I have a 7 day old baby at home I need to get out of this storms way.

Jims5543 09-12-2003 10:17 AM

The fleeing part will be a last minute decision based on the projected path. I will wait till the last minute to leave.

Baldy 09-12-2003 10:47 AM

sounds good.

question for you: Do most people have boards cut for their windows, that they reuse all the time? I mean, that sounds like it would be the smartest thing to do.

I think Tallahassee is pretty protected when it comes to hurricanes, so we've never boarded up our windows.

Drift_It 09-12-2003 10:49 AM

I hope it just comes a little closer then the last one, but passes. It sent us great waves https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

Jims5543 09-12-2003 10:57 AM

It was on my list of things to do for my house to buy hurricane shutters. We just redid the roof a few months ago.

I have 3/4" plywood cut to fit my windows. I put it up years ago when Hurricane Floyd was looming close just like this one.

I have the boards in my garage all marked where to go on the house. I will start putting them up this weekend just in case.

THIS SUCKS!

Hurricanes are no fun. I lived about 500' from the intercoastal in North Carolina and went through 5 hurricanes in the 13 years I lived there. All of them were a little different. Some packed more wind and others caused more flooding.

mazdaspeed7 09-12-2003 11:44 AM

Jims, If youre going to atl to run from the storm, send me a PM before you leave. I live about a mile and a half away from I95 just south of Savannah.

banzaitoyota 09-12-2003 12:44 PM

Went thru HUGO! NEVER AGAIN!!!!

RotaryRetard 09-12-2003 02:05 PM

You better watch this closely too. Its projected path puts it between central Florida and Georgia.

BTW - I love Savannah its so awseome there. I try to stop in there and have dinner anytime I am passing on I-95.

I am not sure where I am going. I might head to Miami if it turns North far enough and get behind it.

kkw4p 09-12-2003 02:27 PM

I was watching comedy central a week ago and a comedian had a good joke about hurricanes.. it went a little something like this..

"A few years ago off the keys a hurricane started brewing, so the PD ordered every one off the island. Everyone left but one man, who was destined to prove that he could survive a hurricane because he had been working out a lot, and he felt physically superior to nature. So he strapped himself to a tree and went out in the hurricane. I wish I could have been there to explain a very simple concept to him: it's not THAT the wind is blowing.. it's WHAT the wind is blowing. If you get hit by a flying volvo.. it doesn't really matter how many sit ups you did that morning."

I laughed hard on that one.

Gen2RXSeven 09-12-2003 02:40 PM

Think I should be good to go in SW Florida.

As far as Savannah Goes, Used to have alot of fun in Sav. Think when I get enough Money up again I'm going back up for a visit and see whats new.

wraith 09-12-2003 03:03 PM

teknics 09-12-2003 03:08 PM

**** why didnt i start preparing earlier! look at how close i am to destruction!

j/k i know what its like to go through bad storms, i wish everyone in dangerous areas to be safe.

wraith 09-12-2003 03:21 PM

yep

Jims5543 09-12-2003 04:11 PM

I was just on the phone with my uncle who works for Florida Power and Light. They are tracking this storm very closely as they will be cleaning up after it if it hits in Florida.

He said they are very confident it will hit land north of Florida and that we might not even get any rain or wind from it.

I partly hope he is right but feel bad for those who are north of here. I guess we will know better by Sunday.

Drift_It 09-12-2003 04:36 PM

I was in charleston when hugo hit. It didnt do anything to our house but everywhere was demolished. I've been through some many hurricanes it doesnt seem to matter anymore, but this one is big, really big, if it doesnt weaken I actually might have to evacuate for once. especially now that I live on the beach! but like I said earlier.

BRING ON THE WAVES!!!!

mazdaspeed7 09-12-2003 04:42 PM

Do you know the last hurricane to make landfall around savannah was in the 1890's? We're tucked in the corner, and the continental shelf always sends the hurricanes up to North Carolina.

But if you do make it up this way, let me know.
