Ok heres the deal, as most of you know my seven's motor don't work. I have an opportunity to get parts off an '86 motor, but i need to know whats wrong with mine first. The problem is, my dad won't let me pull the motor. He claims its cuz i don't rlly have any money at the moment(who does), and because he wants to do it with me.

Understandable, but hes talking bout everything else he has to work on, and how it will be months before we get to it. PROBLEM. I want my seven while i'm still in my senior year, i'm sure you can understand that problem. Whats your advice for getting him to let me pull this motor and check it out?

Race_87RX7 11-10-2002 11:13 AM

I must also note i'm notorious for losing bolts and such, but i plan to take my time and label things, bag things, etc. I mean i am really into this car, and the largest level motor i really had my hand in was a Yamaha Blaster motor.

Listen to your dad, when I was 18 I took my first car apart thinking I was going to have the engine and tranny swapped in a weekend or 2. It was 1989, and the car was a 1984 Trans Am.

Layed the whole thing out on paper beforehand, parts I was going to need, I thought I knew it all.

Well, once I got into the project ( taking the motor OUT is the easiest thing ), un-forseen costs and time stretched my project out into almost 5 months. I also ran out of money at the time. So not being one to EVER ask for money from my dad, my car sat a prisoner in our garage for months. Finally my dad asked me what was wrong and how much money I needed. Well, almost $2000 later my car ran, and I had a payment plan with my dad.

What were the costs I had'nt planned on?

The "gently used" tranny my friend had sold me was a piece of ****, needed a new one, not to mention the bellhousing was all wrong anyhow so I had to **** can the whole thing and I bought a brand new one. Tranny mounts, driveshaft.

Starter wouldnt clear the headers.

Used timing cover ended up leaking, needed a new one.

Headers wouldnt bolt up to the Gale Banks exaust without a test pipe ( thank god Gale Banks sold me the pipe for $9, lol, but it took a month to get it )

The intake manifold I also thought would suit my needs did, but it didnt clear the hood, so I needed a new intake manifold, more money.

The used carburator was also ****....

it adds up, no matter how much or how long you think you need for a project add money and a time buffer, you will need it.

Simple, TECHNICALLY its his car, the title is in his name. They're his tools, etc. Besides, i know sometime thru this i'll need his help, and i don't want to have to kill myself over asking for it...

bigtime 11-10-2002 11:34 AM

i own my car....

1Revvin7 11-10-2002 11:41 AM

if his car doesn't run then he has nothing to lose my taking it apart. And yes rob i know what u mean i took my car apart last year thinking i would have it back in a week,it took me 5 months to figure out a lot of problems, but it was winter time so i didn't care.

Racer X 11-10-2002 07:47 PM

Id leave it or get him to help you get it running at least. From there on its not that bad working on them.I do all my own **** on my 7. :bigthumg:

do what your dad says they are almost always right

blaze08 11-11-2002 01:34 AM

Since you've never pulled an engine out yourself, you can't do it yourself now. You'll most likely need your dad. If you do it by yourself and mess up you'll just end up going to your dad to ask for help and of course he's going to give you that "i told you so" look. So just listen to Dad for now.

Race_87RX7 11-11-2002 02:29 PM

Good news, i talked him into it. Well sorta, he knew i was pissed, and he walked in my room this morning (i didn't go to school overslept) and tossed me a book.

A hayes manual for an '87 RX7. I asked him why he gave it to me and i quote "Do what you gotta do, just don't hesitate to ask for my help man."

How ******* cool is that. Well it turns out my Apex seals are my only problem, so now i ask you this: I'm using 2mm (for now), steel or what?

thnx.

Rob x-7 11-11-2002 02:30 PM

I didnt think there was any school today?

Race_87RX7 11-11-2002 02:53 PM

for most schools no but we went. They took a vote of the school, we took away one or two of our days we didn't really want and added em onto spring break.

RXheaven13b 11-11-2002 04:23 PM

I'd smack his bitch @$$ and tell him to **** off and just do whever you want, it don't run!! Take the thing appart and make him buy what you want the loser, procrastonater!! Sorry, my dad devorced my ma when i was 2 years old and hasn't helped me out with anything yet. But i have a friend who's dad sounds like you're dad. Just do it, after he see's that you know what you're doing he will eather help you or just give you cash to finnish the job.

RXheaven13b 11-11-2002 04:23 PM

Unless he's like my dad............in that case just junk the car.

RXheaven13b 11-11-2002 04:25 PM

Did i mention that my ma poned me off to my grandmother when i was 2? Both my parents SUCK!!

Racer X 11-11-2002 04:25 PM

Good luck. You might as well give it a port job if you have to take the engine apart to change the apexs.Yum.Power! :yum:

RXheaven13b 11-11-2002 04:26 PM

The only nice thing about that is my mom shows me love in $20 bills.

Race_87RX7 11-11-2002 04:37 PM

lmao, my parents are split too, my moms a pothead. But i get 300$ of potmoney every christmas so hey...

Ok so each rotor in a 13b has 3 apex seals correct? so i need 6? And what kinda cash am i looking at for a bridgeport? Do i need new rotors if i port?

bigtime 11-11-2002 04:46 PM

bridge???? i think u should go street

RXheaven13b 11-11-2002 04:55 PM

The seals are about $600 a set, includes everything you need to freshen them up. As for the porting, ask vosko.

Racer X 11-11-2002 05:12 PM

Street port is better for engine life over bridge but there is some people who will do a daily driver with a bridge. :squint: Crazy bastards.I would go with a huge street myself.

bigtime 11-11-2002 05:31 PM

im going street in like 4 months

Race_87RX7 11-12-2002 05:07 AM

so 600 for seals; Well i always thought bridge was a hella lot of more power and street was equivelent to a port/polish job on a four-wheeler lol, BUT it is going to be my daily driver. So a street port, maybe some fuel upgrades? say a bigger fuel pump, new seals, gaskets, how much am i looking at (i'll pm voslo if race and big don't know the price on a SP alrdy)?

DJ Rotor 11-12-2002 08:22 AM

You can't bridgeport that motor anyway because it is a six-port. Which is just as well for you because a bridgeport will idle at about 1500-2000 rpm and drink gas to the tune of 9-12mpg. You can do a mild street port and that will help plenty.

Sounds like you need to do some SERIOUS research. Spend a month studying before you start.

Take the time to do it right the first time and that will save you time in the long run.

eh, if you're thinking of porting, just do a street port... Bridgeporting.. .and just everyday driving is not gonna do much of anything. ANd isn't it harder on your car if you bridgeport it?

Um.. .you're still a senior correct? What do you work for? How much money do you get? Porting isn't that expensive, but you'll need the money, and I doubt your father will let you bridgeport the sucker, if he was leary of you fixing your car up.

Again, I recommand a street port......

Race_87RX7 11-12-2002 02:03 PM

Yea your right, when i said bridgeport he damn near **** himself haha. He said, and i quote, "Gee lets idle at 3 grand on the rpms and drink gas like your grandfather drinks on new years, umm no."

LOL thought it was funny. Well i start work at burger king in a few days, friday i think, making 5.25 an hours, 5 days a week from 4pm to 12am.

I need to afford apex seals and porting, all while paying insurance on my mustang and keeping gas in it, plus maintaining my social life (also costs money). So i expect to have it running by the time i'm 40. I want to make sure its running by christmas tho, otherwise i know my dad will SECCA(think thats it, bracket racing) it. I figure if i can save a few hundred working, and then load up my b-day chrsitmas money i MIGHT be able to squeeze it out.

thnx for the link i'll check it out.

Race_87RX7 11-12-2002 02:28 PM

Well i did some research, seems not only does 90% of the sites i read say porting my 13B 6port non-turbo motor a BAD idea due to thin walls, they won't even TOUCH the exhaust cause of some sleeve that i apparently won't get good results from getting rid of.

Instead they replace the housings with turbo housings and put in new rotors. So now i ask you this:

Do i buy a newly rebuilt motor, or do i buy apex seals and turbo housings, ahve them ported, and use my old rotors(if i can)??

I hate not having money, i saw a race ready 13b 7 motor for 1200 new rebuild with dyno sheets, if i had that $$ i woulda got it. My dad saw "a killer deal", it was a 20b motor for 4 grand. Yea some deal on a BK salary...
