I only use LMHOSTS when going through a router that can't pass the broadcast packets.

My Network at home doesn't use LMHOSTs and has 2 WIN98 machines on it that see the server and all pc's on the network just fine. And it's pure TCP/IP.

I don't use LMHOSTS at work, but do run WINS.

In my experience the the WorkGroup and domain must match what you are logging into or you won't see squat in Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.

I'm not sure about XP but I know W2K will fight to be the master browser.

WINS is providing your browse list then, I use LMHOSTS just because I don't want to mess with WINS on a 2 computer network. Acutally I don't run anything, XP has no problems finding itself

2K will win browser elections, I think it's also supposed to win in the presence of an XP workstation as well. .NET server should win otherwise.

In a domain the PDC is always master browser, unless it's raining outside or your name starts with the letter O. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

In AD I'm going to hazard a guess that the GCS is going to wind up as master but I don't know that for certain and as I loathe the browser service anyways...

Aye the workgroup or domain has to match else you have to look in the whole network. You can still connect to things via the UNC name.

Which everyone should do anyways. I hate the browser service.

NT shouldn't cost a heck of a lot these days, look for it used

You should probably know that your CAN'T buy NT 4.0 new anymore. Microsoft has officially pulled the plug. BTW- Windows 2000 Server is superior in every possible way.

One thing that should help you, make the NT server a DHCP server, without going into much detail, it solves a lot of problems.
